In her account, he was largely absent from her life, and when he was present he criticized her femininity and queerness. These are her characterizations of their relationship. They are reported through interviews and public statements, not independently verified, and Musk has given a different account of the same events.
What Wilson has said about her father
Wilson’s criticism has stayed consistent across the statements reported since 2022, and it centers on three points.
- Absence. In her public response, reported by The Washington Post, she said: “He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there.”
- Treatment of her femininity and queerness. The Washington Post reported her saying that when Musk was present, he “relentlessly harassed” her for her femininity and queerness.
- Character. In her NBC News interview, quoted by The Guardian, she described him as “cold,” “very quick to anger,” and “uncaring and narcissistic.” These are her words about him, not a neutral description.
A timeline of the dispute
| Date | What happened | Source as reported |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | Wilson filed a California court petition seeking a legal name change. It included the statement: “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.” | Quoted by The Washington Post. The full petition has not been quoted beyond this sentence in the coverage reviewed. |
| July 2024 | Musk said publicly that he had been tricked into approving gender-affirming care when Wilson was 16, and described her as effectively lost to him. | Reported by The Washington Post |
| July 2024 | Wilson responded publicly and gave her first interview, to NBC News. She said he was absent for much of her life and criticized her femininity and queerness when present. | NBC News, as reported by The Washington Post and The Guardian |
| March 20, 2025 | Teen Vogue published a second interview and profile covering her mother’s support, her estrangement from Musk, and her experience before coming out. | Teen Vogue; The Guardian’s same-day coverage summarized her account of his absence |
Why she spoke publicly
Wilson’s public response followed Musk’s July 2024 remarks about her transition. Her NBC News interview was her first, and it is the source of most of the statements reported afterward. The coverage presents it as a direct answer to his comments rather than a separate campaign.
Musk’s account and where the two versions diverge
As summarized by The Washington Post, Musk said he had been “tricked” into approving care when Wilson was 16, and that he had subsequently “lost” his child. Wilson disputes his portrayal of her childhood. Her core point is that he does not know what she was like as a child because he was not there. The disagreement is about private family events, and each side’s account rests on its own statements.

Three kinds of claims to keep apart
Most of the confusion around this story comes from treating every statement as equally established. The table separates them.
| Type of claim | Who makes it | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Personal testimony | Wilson, in the 2024 NBC News interview and the 2025 Teen Vogue profile | Her account of his absence, his treatment of her femininity and queerness, and her own experience. It is her account, not an independent finding. |
| Public claims | Musk, in July 2024, as reported by The Washington Post | His account of how he came to approve medical care and how he describes his relationship with her. Not independently verified. |
| Documented chronology | The 2022 court petition and dated press coverage | That the petition contained the quoted statement, and when each public statement was made. |
Her mother and her later account
In the March 20, 2025 Teen Vogue profile, Wilson said her mother, Justine Wilson, was supportive of her transition. The profile quotes her mother saying: “She is big, fierce, wild multi-layered magic.” That is context about Wilson’s home life, not evidence about Musk’s conduct.
Wilson also described severe distress before she came out, and said that transitioning as a minor was medically necessary for her. That is her testimony about her own case. It is not a general statement about medical care for young people. The Guardian’s coverage from the same month reported that she remained estranged from Musk and that she said her mother was supportive. The sources covering this story do not establish her relationship with Musk after March 2025.

What the record does and does not establish
- Established: Wilson’s 2022 petition contained the quoted statement; Musk made public remarks in July 2024; Wilson answered with a public response and an NBC News interview; Teen Vogue published its profile on March 20, 2025.
- Not established: what happened inside the family, whether Musk’s account of his role in her medical care is accurate, and the state of their relationship after March 2025.
