Elisabeth Moss initially passed on The Handmaid’s Tale because she was hesitant to commit to another long-running television series after Mad Men. What changed her mind was the thought of someone else playing June Osborne—and, in her later account, learning who might be offered the role if she declined again.
Why Moss passed the first time
After her long run as Peggy Olson on Mad Men, Moss was unsure about signing up for another television series so soon. She later described the hesitation as reluctance to take on another lengthy commitment, not rejection of the story or its subject.
What made her reconsider
Her 2019 account: imagining another actor as June
In a 2019 interview with Heat, Moss said she pictured another actor playing June and woke in the night thinking about it. The realization that she did not want someone else to take the part prompted her to accept. She summed up that reaction as “pure jealousy and competitiveness,” as reported by The Independent on 16 July 2019.
Her 2025 account: learning who might get the offer
Appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Moss added that after she passed, the offer returned. She said someone let her know who producers might approach if she did not accept. Her response, as quoted by TheWrap on 23 May 2025, was “Over my dead body”; she also said, “I couldn’t stand the idea of anyone else playing that role.” ELLE reported the same later account the following day.

The accounts fit together: the long commitment gave Moss pause, while imagining someone else in the role—and, in the later telling, hearing who might be offered it—made clear how much she wanted to play June. They describe different parts of the reconsideration, rather than competing explanations.
Who might have played June instead?
The cited reports do not name the actor Moss was told might receive the offer. They support saying that she learned someone else could be approached, but not identifying that person. Names circulating elsewhere should not be treated as confirmed.

Why the role may have appealed to her
In an official Channel 4 interview dated 9 May 2018, Moss said she chose roles chiefly for the material and script, and described herself as drawn to “strong, complicated characters.” That offers context for her work on both Mad Men and The Handmaid’s Tale; it does not establish what she was thinking when she first passed.
The Handmaid’s Tale adapts Margaret Atwood’s novel. For readers interested in the source story, the book is an optional companion—not a prerequisite for understanding Moss’s decision.
