In March 2025, vocalist Ken Casey said the band’s handle had been taken over by someone impersonating the group and that the band filed a legal complaint to stop it. An archived suspension notice was already visible by June 17, 2024, so the timeline does not support claims that the band was suspended because of its remarks at a 2025 concert.
What “we broke up with him first” means
“We broke up with him first” was Ken Casey’s way of saying Dropkick Murphys had already chosen to leave Twitter. In a statement shared with Pitchfork on March 18, 2025, the band’s founder and vocalist said: “We broke up with [Elon Musk] first. We quit Twitter in 2022 when he was only half a Nazi.” The latter phrase was Casey’s polemical characterization of Musk, not a neutral description. Pitchfork reported Casey’s statement.
Casey said the band left because it did not want to be part of Musk’s “empire.” His comment was a statement about the band’s decision; it does not establish that Musk personally suspended the band.
Why did the account show as suspended?
Casey attributed the suspension notice to a later dispute over the band’s handle. He said someone else took it while pretending to be the official Dropkick Murphys account, and that the band filed a legal complaint to stop the impersonation. “Which is why @dropkickmurphys shows as suspended,” he said. Pitchfork and The Boston Globe reported the explanation.

What the timeline shows
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2022 | Casey said Dropkick Murphys quit Twitter after Musk’s takeover. |
| By June 17, 2024 | Lead Stories reported that an archived version of the account already displayed a suspension message on this date, and possibly earlier. Lead Stories’ archive review independently dates the notice to before the 2025 concert. |
| March 16, 2025 | Remarks at a Dropkick Murphys concert in Boston about Donald Trump, Musk, and a concertgoer’s MAGA hat circulated online. They prompted speculation that X had suspended the band’s account in response. |
| March 18, 2025 | Casey’s clarification was reported by Pitchfork and The Boston Globe; Lead Stories added it to its fact-check. |
The archive establishes that the suspension message appeared before the Boston show. It does not, on its own, verify every detail Casey gave about the complaint.

Did Musk or X suspend the band over its concert remarks?
The available timeline does not support that conclusion: the suspension notice was already present by June 17, 2024, months before the March 2025 concert. The remarks sparked the speculation, but they cannot explain a suspension display that had appeared earlier. Casey also said the band had left Twitter in 2022 and linked the later notice to the handle dispute.
That distinction matters: a handle displaying as suspended is not proof that Musk personally banned the band, or that X acted in response to a particular political statement. The sources establish the band’s explanation and the earlier archived notice, not the identity of the person who took the handle, the legal result, or the account’s live status today.
