He described the decision in a July 2024 interview with The New York Times, as reported by Billboard Canada. It was a decision about the stage name and project, not an announcement that he would never make music again.
Why is Donald Glover retiring Childish Gambino?
Glover’s explanation was about creative fulfillment. “It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done.’ It’s not fulfilling,” he said. “And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.” The remarks came in an interview with The New York Times, reported by Billboard Canada on July 18, 2024.

He also spoke about the values he wanted to prioritize beyond the demands of a career. “I think grace is undervalued in the world,” he said, describing the joy he feels when he puts his son on his shoulders. “That’s real. No one on their deathbed is going to look back and say, ‘Thank God I avoided being cringe.’” The comments frame the choice as a personal reassessment, rather than a dispute or a single event that forced him to stop using the name.
What was the final Childish Gambino album?
Bando Stone & The New World was presented as the final album under the Childish Gambino name. Billboard described it as the fifth Childish Gambino album; its release was scheduled for July 19, 2024. The album’s place as a closing chapter helps explain why Glover’s remarks about moving on attracted attention, but the stated reason remained that the project no longer fulfilled him.

#1 Best Overall
Glover had announced the album’s accompanying tour in May 2024, around the time he released Atavista, which he called the finished version of 3.15.20. The Associated Press reported the announcement of The New World Tour on May 13, 2024. RCA Records lists a 2LP vinyl edition of Bando Stone and the New World.
Was he retiring from music altogether?
The interview account supports a decision to move on from the Childish Gambino project; it does not establish that Glover would never make music again. “Retiring Childish Gambino” is best understood as retiring that moniker and its associated project, rather than a definitive promise to leave music for good.

How did health concerns affect The New World Tour?
The tour’s cancellation was a later development, distinct from the reason Glover initially gave for leaving the stage name. After postponing dates in September 2024, he canceled the remaining shows in October to focus on his health and an upcoming surgery. In a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times on October 4, 2024, he wrote: “My path to recovery is something I need to confront seriously.”
In November 2025, the Associated Press reported that Glover said a doctor had told him he had suffered a stroke during the period that led to the tour cancellation. That later disclosure offers context for the tour’s interruption; it was not the explanation he gave in July 2024 for retiring Childish Gambino.
