Tanjiro’s characteristic Nichirin Sword is jet black; its bright-red appearance is a separate story moment, not its standard color. The official Swordsmith Village Arc character page confirms that he uses Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura and goes to the village to repair the sword he chipped in the Entertainment District battle. A secondary episode recap attributes the red moment in season 3, episode 5, to Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art—but the official character page does not explain how the transformation works.
What is a bright red Nichirin Sword?
A Nichirin Sword is the name used in Demon Slayer for the weapon carried by demon slayers. For Tanjiro, the manufacturer’s official PROPLICA product page identifies the blade’s characteristic color as jet black: Tamashii Web’s PROPLICA Tanjiro Kamado Nichirin Sword. The bright-red blade is a distinct story state, not the sword’s usual color.
Why does Tanjiro’s sword turn red?
In its account of season 3, episode 5, a secondary recap says Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art causes Tanjiro’s sword to turn red: CBR’s episode explainer. Treat that as the recap’s explanation, rather than a definitive account of the transformation’s full rules. The official Swordsmith Village Arc character page documents Tanjiro’s techniques and the sword-repair premise, but does not explain the red state: official Tanjiro character page.
In particular, Hinokami Kagura is one of Tanjiro’s techniques, but the cited official page does not say that performing it alone turns his blade red. The available account also does not establish all requirements, duration, or effects of the state.

Why does Tanjiro go to the Swordsmith Village?
The official Swordsmith Village Arc character page says Tanjiro heads there to meet Haganezuka and repair the Nichirin Sword he chipped in the fierce Entertainment District battle. It also identifies both Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura among his techniques. These details explain the repair storyline and Tanjiro’s fighting styles, but do not supply a full explanation of the red blade.
Does the official Tanjiro sword replica turn red?
No. The official Tamashii Nations PROPLICA is documented as a black-bladed display collectible, not a reproduction of the temporary bright-red story state. Its Japan product listing describes an approximately 1/1-scale sword measuring about 880 mm in total length, made with ABS and die-cast parts, and includes a dedicated pedestal, manual, recorded character lines, sounds, and music. The listing’s age guidance is 15 and up.

Those are historical Japan listing details, not a current or universal price or indication of stock. Check the relevant regional listing for present availability.

They are separate products with different purposes. The PROPLICA listing describes a display-focused, approximately full-scale black-bladed collectible with a pedestal and audio. Bandai America’s DX Nichirin Sword manual describes a play-oriented toy with sound and action modes, removable components, and a requirement for two AAA batteries, sold separately. The manual does not establish current stock or the exact contents of every regional package version, so check the listing for the particular version before buying.

Neither source documents a red-blade mode for these products. If the bright-red story appearance is what you want, do not assume that either the PROPLICA display collectible or the DX toy reproduces it.
