There is no single confirmed cause for every black screen when streaming a prerecorded video from StreamYard to YouTube. First check the actual video encoding: StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream guide specifies an MP4 file with H.264 video, and its optimization guidance recommends AAC audio, constant 30 fps, Web Optimized (Faststart), Align A/V, and a total bitrate below 10,000 kbps (10 Mbps). If those checks do not identify the problem, trace where the picture disappears: in the file, StreamYard studio, YouTube Live Control Room, or the public watch page.
First locate where the picture goes black
A black picture can originate at different stages. Before changing settings, note whether audio continues and whether the issue appears in the local file, StreamYard, YouTube’s live preview, or only for viewers. Ask whether one viewer or several viewers on different connections see it. This is a practical way to narrow the fault, not a published StreamYard diagnostic procedure.
- Black in the local file: inspect or replace the source before troubleshooting the broadcast.
- Local file plays, but the StreamYard studio preview is black: check whether the preview is for the uploaded video or for a camera/screen-share source. Browser, device, firewall, or proxy restrictions are relevant especially when the studio itself shows a spinning circle.
- Studio looks right, but YouTube’s Live Control Room or the public watch page is black: compare the outgoing stream with YouTube’s preview and check for encoder or connection errors.
- Only one viewer reports a black picture: the issue may be local to that viewer. If multiple viewers on different connections report it, investigate the outgoing stream and its source.
StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream page explains how to stream an uploaded video, but its official guidance does not establish one cause or universal fix for every black-screen case. Its format recommendations are a useful first check, not a guarantee.
Check the video file’s actual contents and encoding
Play the exact file you uploaded on the same computer. Confirm that it has a visible picture throughout the section that appears black in the broadcast, and note whether its audio plays. A filename ending in .mp4 does not identify the codecs inside it: MP4 is a container, and video within it can use different encoding formats.

For prerecorded streaming, StreamYard’s help guide calls for MP4 with H.264 video. Its optimization article recommends AAC audio and a total bitrate below 10,000 kbps (10 Mbps). StreamYard also notes in guidance for its long-form video-sharing or video-clip feature that an MP4 can still contain a codec a browser does not support; that is a reason to check the codec, not proof that this particular feature causes every prerecorded-stream failure.
Re-encode using StreamYard’s recommended settings
If you do not know the source settings or they differ from StreamYard’s recommendations, convert a copy of the file and upload that version. StreamYard recommends HandBrake for re-encoding and advises re-uploading a converted file for upload trouble or lag.

If the StreamYard studio preview is black
Check exactly which source is black. A problem with an uploaded video is not the same as a black camera or screen-share preview. StreamYard documents that a firewall or proxy can block connections required for studio camera and screen-share media; its article describes a black screen with a spinning circle. This points to a possible studio/network restriction when that symptom is present, but does not prove a firewall is responsible for a black YouTube broadcast of an uploaded file.
- If you are on a work network or using a work-provided device, ask the network administrator whether a firewall or proxy blocks StreamYard’s required connections.
- Check StreamYard’s browser and device guidance. Its onboarding article recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop.
- If the affected source is a screen share on Chrome running on Linux with Wayland, StreamYard documents a separate black-screen issue when sharing the entire display and provides a PipeWire capturer flag workaround. That applies to screen sharing, not to uploading a prerecorded video.
Do not use a screen-sharing workaround as if it were a confirmed fix for prerecorded playback.

Compare what StreamYard is sending with the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and the public watch page. If the picture is wrong in the outgoing stream, YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s own output, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. These checks are most useful when the file plays correctly but the broadcast looks faulty, particularly when several viewers report the same problem.

YouTube’s general encoder setup guidance discusses using a YouTube server URL and stream key in encoder workflows. Do not assume you need to change those settings when using StreamYard’s native YouTube destination integration; follow the connection method you actually use. If the issue continues after checking the encoder, YouTube recommends reporting the continuing live-stream problem.

What to send when you escalate the problem
Share enough detail for support to tell whether the failure is in the media, studio, or outgoing stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and reporting continuing issues.
- The file’s container, video codec, audio codec, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Whether the exact file plays locally, and whether audio continues when the stream picture is black.
- Where the picture first disappears: local file, StreamYard studio, YouTube Live Control Room, or public watch page.
- Whether one viewer or multiple viewers on different connections are affected.
- A screenshot of the affected preview or page and any visible error message.
