Video Bitrate Explained: How to Choose the Right Bitrate for Live Streaming

There is no universal live-stream bitrate. Match the destination’s guidance to your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test upload stability before going live.

There is no single best live-streaming bitrate. Choose the destination platform’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your internet connection can sustain that incoming bitrate and test with representative content. For YouTube Live, for example, 1080p at 60 fps has different recommendations for H.264 than for AV1 or H.265.

What bitrate means in a live stream

Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). For a live stream, the encoder sends this data to a platform’s ingest server. The platform may then process it into one or more versions for viewers.

A higher bitrate can preserve more image detail, especially in fast-moving or visually complex scenes, but it also demands more from the upload connection and encoder. Resolution and frame rate matter too: increasing either can require more bitrate and encoding capacity. The right setting is therefore a match among destination, codec, resolution, frame rate, and connection—not a universal number.

Use the destination’s recommendation for your exact settings

The figures below are YouTube’s current recommended incoming bitrates for live encoders, checked October 3, 2026. They are recommendations for sending a stream to YouTube, not guarantees of viewer playback quality or a YouTube output ladder. The page gives no publication year, so check it again before a broadcast in case the guidance changes. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommended H.264 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended AV1/H.265 minimum
2160p (4K), 60 fps 50 Mbps 14 Mbps 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 42 Mbps 11 Mbps 30 Mbps 8 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 34 Mbps 8 Mbps 24 Mbps 6 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 21 Mbps 7 Mbps 15 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps 12 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps 10 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps 2 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.3 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.3 Mbps

Use the column that matches the codec you will actually send. The H.264 recommendation is not interchangeable with the AV1 or H.265 recommendation. Minimums are listed separately from recommendations; they should not be mistaken for the recommended target.

Useful example: YouTube 1080p60

For a YouTube Live stream at 1080p and 60 fps, the table recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. The listed minimums are 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps, respectively. First confirm that your encoder, destination, and selected codec are compatible, then use the recommendation that matches your chosen codec.

Do not confuse incoming bitrate with viewer output

YouTube’s table describes the bitrate sent by your encoder. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. A platform’s incoming recommendation and its viewer-facing output renditions answer different questions.

Set the encoder and connection up for a reliable stream

1. Choose destination, resolution, frame rate, and codec

Start with the service you are streaming to. Select a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the content and audience, then consult that service’s current guidance for the matching codec. A high-motion documentary scene, for example, may expose quality problems that are less visible in a static talking-head test. Higher resolution generally needs more bitrate, and higher frame rates add encoding workload.

2. Apply YouTube’s relevant encoder settings

For YouTube Live, its encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to and through Google’s servers. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and notes that AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for details and changes.

3. Check upload capacity on the actual connection

Run an upload speed test on the connection you will use for the broadcast. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Your available upload speed needs to sustain the chosen stream reliably; a speed-test result is not a promise that the connection will remain steady during the event. The guidance does not establish one universal upload-headroom percentage, so do not treat an arbitrary buffer as a guaranteed safe setting.

If the connection cannot reliably support the selected bitrate, choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that matches the platform guidance and your real upload performance. A wired connection may be a practical option where available, but it cannot increase the upload capacity of your internet plan or guarantee stream quality.

4. Test with representative video and monitor health

Before the event, run a test with audio and motion similar to what you intend to stream. Check the platform’s live health indicators while testing and during the broadcast, and adjust if the stream is unstable or visibly degraded. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Twitch

Twitch’s official broadcasting guidance defines ingest bitrate as the data sent to Twitch and notes that higher resolution requires a higher bitrate, while higher frame rate takes more encoding power. The available official guidance does not establish a numeric maximum here, so do not apply YouTube’s table to Twitch or infer a current Twitch ceiling from it. Check Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines for the service’s current rules.

Availability and exact configuration details can change; consult Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting information before relying on a particular setup.

Google Cloud Live Stream API

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API publishes separate recommendations for input and output. Its input figures include 8 Mbps H.264 or 7.2 Mbps H.265 for 720p25/30; 15 or 13.5 Mbps for 720p50/60; 20 or 15 Mbps for 1080p50/60; and 50 or 37.5 Mbps for 2160p50/60. These are API input recommendations, not consumer platform limits.

The API’s output ladder is a different measure: it lists 6 Mbps for 1080p25/30, 9 Mbps for 1080p50/60, 15 Mbps for 2160p25/30, and 25 Mbps for 2160p50/60. Google Cloud marked its guidance last updated September 24, 2026. See Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-quality problems

  • The stream buffers, drops frames, or loses connection: Check upload performance on the live connection and compare the encoder’s output with the destination’s recommendation. If the connection cannot sustain the setting, reduce the stream configuration and test again.
  • The image looks soft or blocky: Confirm the selected bitrate matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. Test with footage containing similar motion and detail; do not assume a bitrate from another platform or codec applies.
  • The encoder and platform show different quality labels: Distinguish the encoder’s incoming stream settings from the platform’s processed viewer renditions. On YouTube, automatic transcoding creates multiple output formats.
  • The encoder configuration is rejected or behaves unexpectedly: Verify transport, codec, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval against the destination’s current documentation. For YouTube, the stated keyframe recommendation is two seconds and the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • A test succeeds but the event does not: Test on the same network and equipment planned for the event, with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health while live. A short successful test does not establish that changing network conditions will remain stable.

When bitrate tuning is not the main problem: 24/7 YouTube loops

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video or playlist live on YouTube continuously, the challenge may be keeping the streaming computer and connection running, not finding a different bitrate. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a home computer or OBS staying on, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. Learn more at StreamNeo.

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, the service choice comes first: StreamNeo runs it from the cloud at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
