First work out which playlist is skipping: a local playlist played by OBS’s VLC Video source, or a YouTube playlist embedded in an OBS browser source. They have different causes. For local files, check VLC installation and source settings, then compare the OBS preview with YouTube playback. For an embedded playlist, check whether the missing video allows embedding and is public and viewable to the audience.
First identify where the playlist is playing
“YouTube live playlist” can describe two different setups. In one, OBS plays local files through its VLC Video source while sending a live stream to YouTube. In the other, OBS displays a YouTube playlist—often through a browser source—and YouTube supplies the videos. The right troubleshooting path depends on which one you mean.
Ask: Does the skip also appear in the OBS preview or a local recording, or only in the YouTube live playback? If the OBS preview or recording skips, investigate the OBS source or file. If OBS looks continuous but the YouTube viewer playback skips or stalls, check the live event and stream quality in YouTube Live Control Room before changing the playlist.
If OBS is playing local files with VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source is designed to play multiple media items as a playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.

Check the source and playlist settings
- In OBS, select the VLC Video source and open its Properties.
- Check that the intended files appear in the playlist and in the intended order.
- Review Shuffle Playlist. When enabled, items play in randomized order rather than following the list order.
- Review Loop Playlist if you expect the playlist to repeat. OBS documents this setting as on by default, and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; defaults do not establish the cause of a particular skip.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. This determines what playback does while the source is hidden, so a scene change or source visibility change may affect what you see.
- If the source uses network media, note the Network caching setting. OBS documents a 400 ms default; that value alone is not evidence that caching caused an item to be skipped.
The VLC Video source also exposes audio-track and subtitle settings. Those affect audio or captions, not whether a playlist item is present, but they can help explain a symptom that only appears to be a skip.
Compare the affected file with one that plays
Check the file’s extension and whether the file is readable. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. A listed extension does not guarantee that every file will play correctly; compare the affected file with one that works and check the OBS log for source errors. Without the file details or log, a specific codec or file defect cannot be identified.

If the playlist is embedded from YouTube
A video can be absent from an embedded playlist even when it appears in the playlist elsewhere. YouTube Help says videos may not appear when the uploader has disabled embedding or the video is age-restricted. Private videos also will not be available to viewers who have not been given access. Check the affected video’s privacy and sharing status as well as its embedding availability.
- Open the playlist on YouTube and identify the exact missing item.
- Check whether the video is public or shared with the people expected to view it.
- Ask the uploader to confirm that embedding is enabled.
- Check whether the video is age-restricted; some viewers or playback contexts may not be able to access it.
- Test the playlist in the same viewing context as your OBS browser source. A video that is unavailable there points to a YouTube access restriction, not a local VLC playlist setting.

Separate an OBS source issue from a YouTube live issue
Use the same content at both checkpoints: the OBS preview (or a local recording) and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If the item is missing in OBS, focus on the source, playlist, and media file. If OBS is continuous but the live playback is not, check that the event is accessible and monitor its audio and video quality. YouTube notes that network congestion can cause live playback problems; an apparent skip in the viewer experience does not by itself prove that OBS skipped a file.

Audio cuts and delays may be a different symptom
A file that plays but loses audio at its beginning or end is not necessarily being skipped. An OBS issue opened on 31 July 2023 described a report of approximately one second missing at the start and end of MP3 files in a VLC playlist. A separate issue about VLC media-source lag was closed as completed on 23 July 2023; the issue page says a project member confirmed the reported delay was limited to monitoring and recordings captured playback correctly. These are specific reports, not proof of the cause in another setup.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Only a YouTube playlist item is missing: check embedding, age restriction, privacy, and sharing.
- The OBS preview skips a local item: check VLC installation and bitness, playlist order, shuffle, visibility behavior, file readability, and the OBS log.
- OBS is continuous but YouTube playback stalls: inspect Live Control Room accessibility and stream quality, including possible network congestion.
- Only audio is cut or late: distinguish a playback problem from an audio-monitoring symptom; compare a local recording and the live preview.
There is no single established cause for every VLC playlist skip. Without the OBS version, operating system, source type, affected file, and log, treat these checks as diagnosis rather than assuming a confirmed general OBS bug.
