Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf YouTube TV shows video but produces no sound, first check the TV and sound-system volume, then switch YouTube TV’s 5.1 audio setting to Off. Restart the TV or streaming device and, if necessary, temporarily select Stereo or PCM as the digital audio output.
The right fix depends on whether every app is silent, all YouTube TV programs are affected, or only one channel or program has a problem.
First, identify where the sound is failing
Before resetting anything, run these three tests:
- Open another app, such as Netflix, Prime Video, the regular YouTube app, or a free TV app. Play a video with known audio.
- If your television provides menu sounds, test those too.
- In YouTube TV, change to several unrelated channels and test both live and recorded content.
| What you find | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Every app and the TV itself are silent | Check the TV, soundbar, receiver, speakers, cables, and audio-output selection. |
| Other apps work, but YouTube TV is silent everywhere | Check 5.1 audio, the app state, updates, and the streaming device’s output format. |
| Only one channel or program is silent | Test the program, audio track, and stream rather than replacing hardware. |
| YouTube TV works on another device | The problem is probably local to the original TV or streaming device. |
YouTube TV’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking whether another app has the same problem. If the entire device is silent, the TV or audio-system manufacturer is usually the better source of help.
1. Check mute, volume, and the selected audio output
Press volume up on the TV remote, not just the remote for your streaming device. Press mute twice to make sure the TV is not muted. Then check the soundbar or AV receiver separately: it may have its own mute control, volume level, and input selection.

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
- Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
- Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
In the TV’s sound settings, confirm the intended output:
- TV speakers if no external audio system is connected.
- HDMI ARC/eARC if a soundbar or receiver uses the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Optical/Digital Audio if an optical cable is connected.
- Bluetooth only if headphones or speakers are intentionally being used.
Disconnect headphones and Bluetooth devices temporarily. A connected device may be receiving the sound instead of the television speakers. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so do not assume a Samsung, LG, Roku TV, Google TV, or Vizio menu path will be identical.
A useful isolation test is to switch temporarily to the built-in TV speakers. If sound returns, YouTube TV is probably working and the fault is in the soundbar, receiver, cable, input, or audio format.
2. Turn off YouTube TV 5.1 audio
A common cause of video with silence is an audio-format mismatch. YouTube TV can use 5.1 audio when the device, program, app, and speaker system support it. If the TV, receiver, soundbar, optical connection, or HDMI path cannot decode the stream, video may continue while audio disappears.

To test this:
- Open YouTube TV.
- Select your profile picture or account avatar.
- Open Settings.
- Select 5.1 audio.
- Switch it to Off.
- Change channels or stop and restart the current program.
This is a compatibility test, not proof that 5.1 was definitely the cause. YouTube TV says surround sound depends on a compatible device, speaker system, program, and app environment. Its current help documentation also lists a Cobalt version requirement for the supported 5.1 experience. See the official YouTube TV 5.1 guide for current compatibility details.
Turning 5.1 off may remove surround sound and can affect secondary audio options such as descriptive audio or additional languages. If ordinary stereo audio works reliably, you can later re-enable 5.1 and troubleshoot the external audio chain.

3. Confirm whether the program actually carries 5.1 audio
Not every YouTube TV channel or program uses surround sound. To inspect the current stream:
- Play the program.
- Open the player controls and select More.
- Select the bug icon for Stats for nerds.
- Check the Codecs section.
An audio codec shown as AC-3 or E-AC-3 indicates a surround-capable format. If the program is stereo-only, the absence of 5.1 is normal and is not evidence of a fault.

If disabling YouTube TV 5.1 does not restore sound, temporarily choose the most broadly compatible output format: Stereo, PCM, or the manufacturer’s equivalent. This may sacrifice surround channels, but it helps identify whether Dolby-format negotiation is failing.
Roku
On Roku, open Home → Settings → Audio → Digital output format and test Stereo. If you need surround sound, choose Custom and select a format your soundbar or receiver supports. Roku also recommends checking cables, turning Volume Modes off while diagnosing surround problems, and restarting the Roku, TV, and audio system.
See Roku’s guides for no-sound troubleshooting and surround-sound setup.
Apple TV
On Apple TV, open Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format and test Stereo instead of Dolby Digital 5.1. Apple documents additional limitations involving receivers, soundbars, ARC, and Dolby Atmos, so an audio format that works with one connection may not work through every ARC configuration. See Apple’s audio-format troubleshooting and Apple TV audio connection guidance.

Google TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Xbox, and PlayStation
Menu labels vary by model. Look under Settings for Sound, Audio, Digital audio output, or Surround sound, then test Stereo or PCM. If audio returns, the original automatic, passthrough, Dolby, or surround setting is not being handled correctly by the complete device chain.
5. Check the soundbar, receiver, ARC/eARC, and optical connection
If TV speakers work but the soundbar or receiver does not, check the external audio path:
- Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Set the soundbar or receiver to its ARC/eARC input.
- Reseat the HDMI or optical cable at both ends.
- Restart the TV and audio system.
- Try another suitable HDMI cable or port.
- Temporarily bypass the receiver or soundbar by connecting the streaming device directly to the TV.
- Test TV speakers and Stereo/PCM before trying more advanced Dolby or passthrough settings.
ARC sends audio from the TV back to a soundbar or receiver. Incorrect HDMI-CEC or ARC capability communication can cause the devices to select an unsupported format and produce silence. Roku explains these issues in its guidance on Roku TV and soundbar audio and ARC, eARC, and optical connections.
Optical connections also have format limitations. Stereo may work when a newer surround format does not.

6. Restart and update the app and device
A stuck app or HDMI handshake can affect audio even when video continues. Use this order:
- Close and reopen YouTube TV.
- Power-cycle the TV or streaming device. YouTube TV recommends leaving many devices off for about 30 seconds; its Chromecast guidance recommends unplugging the device for approximately one minute.
- Restart the soundbar or receiver too.
- Check for TV or streaming-device system updates.
- Update YouTube TV.
- Uninstall and reinstall YouTube TV, then sign in again.
For Google TV, the documented restart path is Settings → System → Restart. To force-close an app, use Settings → Apps → [app] → Force stop → OK. To update apps, open Google Play Store → profile icon → Manage apps & games → Updates.

Google TV may also provide Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → Clear data. Clearing data removes stored app data and may require you to sign in again. Reinstalling is more disruptive than restarting, but can repair a damaged app installation. A factory reset erases device data and should be a last resort, not an early YouTube TV audio fix.
See YouTube TV’s Chromecast and streaming-device steps and Google’s restart, force-stop and update, and app-management documentation.
7. When only one channel or program has no sound
If other YouTube TV content works, do not assume the TV or soundbar is defective. Try these checks:
- Change to several unrelated channels.
- Reopen the affected program and rewind it.
- Compare a live channel with a recorded program.
- Look for an alternate language, descriptive-audio, or other audio track.
- Test the same channel on a phone, computer, or second TV.
- Use Stats for nerds to inspect the audio codec.
Some on-demand programs may be quieter than live programs. That is different from complete silence: compare volume levels before changing hardware. If only one network or program remains silent while everything else works, it may be a program-level or source-feed issue. Without confirmation from YouTube TV, it is not possible to identify the cause definitively, so a factory reset or equipment replacement is not an evidence-based next step.

Roku
Use Roku’s digital-output menu to test Stereo, disable Volume Modes while diagnosing, check cables, and restart the player and audio system. Some programs are stereo-only, and some applications provide 5.1 only for particular titles.
Chromecast and Google TV
Restart the device, update both the system and YouTube TV, and reinstall the app if necessary. Very old Chromecast hardware may have limitations because first-generation devices no longer receive software or security updates.

To adjust the volume using the TV remote control, both the TV and soundbar must support CEC functionality.
Apple TV
Test the Audio Format menu with Stereo, especially when Apple TV passes through a receiver or soundbar before reaching the TV. ARC and Dolby Atmos support depends on the exact connection and equipment.
Samsung, LG, Vizio, and Hisense TVs
Confirm the TV model and operating system. YouTube TV support varies by model and software version; installing the app does not guarantee that every surround format is supported. Try built-in TV speakers and the TV’s digital-audio setting before diagnosing the streaming service.
Xbox and PlayStation
Check the console’s audio-output settings and test Stereo or uncompressed PCM. Then compare the console with YouTube TV on another supported device. This separates console audio configuration from the account or program.
YouTube TV maintains a supported-device list, but device compatibility and 5.1 compatibility are separate questions.
9. When to contact support
Contact YouTube TV or the device manufacturer after you have isolated the failing part. Record:
- TV brand and exact model.
- Streaming-device model and operating-system version.
- YouTube TV app version, if available.
- Whether TV speakers, a soundbar, receiver, optical, ARC/eARC, or Bluetooth is being used.
- Whether other apps have sound.
- Whether turning off 5.1 or selecting Stereo/PCM restored audio.
- The affected channel or program and whether the problem is live, recorded, or on-demand.
- The Stats for nerds audio codec, if available.
YouTube TV’s cited troubleshooting guidance mentions a connection of at least 3 Mbps for an optimal viewing experience, but adequate bandwidth does not guarantee correct audio output. Normal video with total silence more often points to routing, format compatibility, app state, or a program-specific stream.
