“Upcoming” usually means the scheduled YouTube Live event has not actually started. The creator must launch it: for an encoder stream, send the video feed, wait for its preview in YouTube Live Control Room, and click Go live. For a webcam stream, open the scheduled event under Manage and click Go Live. Viewers cannot make that creator-side change from the watch page.
What “Upcoming” means on a scheduled study stream
YouTube labels scheduled videos that have not yet streamed as Upcoming. A scheduled stream may appear as Upcoming in subscribers’ feeds before its broadcast begins, even if the event page is already available. YouTube Help describes this expected behavior in Manage live stream settings and Create a live stream via webcam.
If the event time has not arrived, the status alone does not indicate a fault. If the time has arrived, the creator should check that the event has been launched using the workflow for the streaming method in use.
Check whether you are watching a trailer or a live broadcast
A scheduled event can have a trailer configured. YouTube says, “Your trailer will play for viewers on the watch page before the live stream starts.” So if video is playing on the event page while the status is still Upcoming, it may be the trailer—not the study stream broadcast. The creator can check the event’s settings in YouTube Studio; viewers should wait for the actual live event or ask the creator whether a trailer is configured. Fix it if the creator is streaming with an encoder
An encoder workflow has two stages: start sending the feed to YouTube, then launch the broadcast from Live Control Room. Starting playback in the encoder alone does not necessarily make the scheduled event live.
- Check the encoder destination. Confirm it is configured with YouTube’s server URL and the stream key for the scheduled event. A wrong key or destination can mean the intended event receives no feed.
- Start sending the study video. Start the encoder’s stream so it sends the feed to YouTube.
- Wait for the preview. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait until the stream preview appears. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
- Launch the event. Click Go live in Live Control Room. Check the watch page afterward to confirm the scheduled stream is playing.
If the preview never appears, check that the encoder is sending to the correct event with the corresponding stream key. If the preview appears but the watch page remains Upcoming, verify that the creator completed the final Go live action.

Fix it if the creator is streaming from a webcam
For a scheduled webcam stream, YouTube’s documented launch action is in Live Control Room:
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live tab.
- Choose Manage.
- Select the scheduled stream.
- Click Go Live.

Make sure the event is a Live stream, not a Premiere
A title or thumbnail does not establish which kind of event the creator set up. YouTube distinguishes a Live stream, which delivers media in real time, from a Premiere, where viewers watch a new video together with the creator and community. If the page or scheduled event is a Premiere rather than a Live event, it follows that format instead of the encoder or webcam launch workflow above. YouTube explains the distinction in Watch live streams – Computer.
Quick diagnosis
- It is before the scheduled time: Upcoming is expected; wait for the creator to start the event.
- A video is playing before the broadcast: It may be the configured trailer.
- The scheduled time has arrived, and the creator uses an encoder: Check the YouTube server URL and event stream key, start sending the feed, wait for the preview, and click Go live.
- The creator uses a webcam: In Live Control Room, go to Manage, select the scheduled stream, and click Go Live.
- The event still does not match the expected format: Confirm whether it is a Live stream or a Premiere.
