A DVD displays “Wrong Region,” “Illegal DVD Region,” or “Area Limits” when the disc’s regional code does not match the region setting of the DVD player or computer optical drive. A U.S. Region 1 player, for example, may reject a Region 2 DVD from the United Kingdom or a Region 6 DVD from mainland China. Sony describes this as a geographic distribution restriction used to control where and when releases are sold.
Region coding is only one possible cause. PAL or NTSC incompatibility, a mislabeled used disc, a drive that has exhausted its permitted region changes, damaged data, missing playback software, or a failing player can produce similar frustration. The safest approach is to identify the disc and player regions before changing anything.
What DVD region codes mean
DVD-Video discs can contain regional-control information. Before playback, the player or optical drive compares the disc’s region information with its own permitted region. If they do not match, playback may be blocked.

Regional coding helps studios and home-video distributors coordinate release dates, territorial licensing, pricing, and distribution. It is not the same as encryption or copy protection. A disc may have a region code, CSS protection, a PAL or NTSC video standard, and unusual or damaged authoring at the same time.

These are broad market groupings, not a guarantee that every country or individual release follows a simple geographic rule. The code assigned to the particular disc matters more than the country where it was purchased or manufactured. HP provides a standard DVD and Blu-ray region reference.
Common examples of a region mismatch
- A Region 1 player rejects a Region 2 DVD from the United Kingdom.
- A U.S. player rejects a Region 6 DVD from China.
- A Region 0 or All disc generally passes the regional check, but may still fail because of PAL/NTSC incompatibility, damage, encryption, or a faulty player.
“Imported” does not automatically mean “wrong region.” An imported disc may be Region 0/All, while a used disc sold locally may have been imported, repackaged, or placed in the wrong case.
How to check the DVD’s region
- Inspect the back cover for “Region 1,” “Region 2,” and similar wording.
- Look on the disc label for a globe symbol containing a number.
- Search for “Region 0,” “All Regions,” or “Region Free.” These labels commonly indicate that the disc is intended for playback without a regional restriction.
- Check the product listing or publisher documentation, especially for used or marketplace purchases.
- If the packaging and disc disagree, treat the disc marking and a test in a known-compatible player as more useful evidence than the seller’s location.
How to check or change the region in Windows
On many Windows systems, the common path is:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Double-click the optical drive.
- Open the DVD Region tab.
- Select the region matching the disc and choose OK.
HP documents this procedure, but the labels and available tabs vary by Windows version, drive firmware, drivers, and playback software. Some newer computers have no internal optical drive, and not every external USB drive exposes the same controls.

Check the remaining change count before confirming. Do not switch regions merely to test a disc. Computer drives commonly use a finite-change system, although the exact behavior is hardware-dependent. The setting can involve the drive firmware as well as the operating system and playback application. Windows may also require separate DVD playback software; HP notes that Windows 10 does not include a preinstalled DVD or Blu-ray movie application and that decoder availability can vary by region.
How to change the region on a Mac
Apple’s documented procedure is:
- Insert a coded DVD from another region.
- When DVD Player asks whether to change the drive’s region, select the region matching the disc.
- Confirm the change.
Apple states that the region can be changed only five times, including the original setting. After the fifth change, the drive remains permanently assigned to the last selected region. This warning applies before you approve the change, not after you have used it up.
Current Macs may require an external USB optical drive, and an external drive can have its own region setting. Changing DVD Player or another macOS application does not necessarily change the drive’s firmware behavior.

Will VLC solve a wrong-region DVD?
Sometimes, but not reliably. VLC is free, open-source playback software that supports DVDs, making it a useful test when the bundled movie application is the problem.

VLC is not a guaranteed hardware-region bypass. If the optical drive blocks access because of its region setting, VLC may not be able to read the disc. Results also depend on the operating system, the disc’s protection and navigation, the drive, and the condition of the files. VideoLAN’s documentation discusses DVD playback and region-related limitations.
VLC may therefore help distinguish a playback-application problem from a disc or drive problem, but it cannot repair a permanently locked, physically incompatible, or failing drive.

What if the disc and player are supposedly the same region?
Work through these possibilities before changing the drive:
- The disc is mislabeled: a used DVD may be in the wrong case, or a listing may describe the seller’s market rather than the disc’s actual code.
- The player has another setting: second-hand or imported equipment may be configured for a different region.
- The drive has exhausted its changes: a computer drive may be permanently fixed to its last setting.
- The disc is Region 0/All but incompatible in another way: PAL/NTSC, poor authoring, CSS handling, scratches, manufacturing defects, or unsupported display standards can still prevent playback.
- The optical hardware is failing: test another commercial disc from the same region and then test the suspect disc in another known-compatible player.
Sony notes that some players cannot support another video format even after a region issue is addressed. Sony also advises that service may be required when a player suddenly shows a region error for discs from the appropriate region.
DVD region codes are not PAL and NTSC

A region-compatible disc can still fail if the player or television does not support its video standard. Conversely, a player may support PAL video but still reject the disc because its region code is wrong. Do not assume that every Region 2 disc is PAL or every Region 1 disc is NTSC; those combinations are common, not absolute.

DVD regions versus Blu-ray regions
DVD and Blu-ray use separate regional systems. DVDs use numbered regions, generally 1 through 6, plus labels such as 0 or All. Blu-ray uses Regions A, B, and C. DVD Region 1 is not the same as Blu-ray Region A, and DVD Region 2 is not the same as Blu-ray Region B.
First confirm the medium. A Blu-ray error needs Blu-ray compatibility information, not the DVD region-setting instructions in this article.
Choose the least risky solution

Second optical drive
A second internal or external drive can be practical for people who regularly use two regions. One drive can remain assigned to each region, avoiding repeated changes to a primary drive. Confirm the drive’s region behavior, operating-system compatibility, playback software, and PAL/NTSC support. USB connectivity alone says nothing about whether the drive is region-free.
Multi-region DVD player
This is usually the simplest living-room option for frequent international DVD use. Verify that the exact model supports multiple DVD regions, PAL and NTSC playback, PAL-to-NTSC conversion where needed, HDMI output, and a clear warranty and return policy. A seller’s “worldwide” claim may not cover every format combination, and DVD multi-region support does not imply Blu-ray multi-region support.
MakeMKV
MakeMKV currently lists version 1.18.4, dated June 15, 2026, and says DVD discs are fully supported. Its purchase page describes DVD and AVCHD conversion or streaming as available free, while Blu-ray functionality follows a different shareware licensing model.
MakeMKV is useful when you want to watch a disc as a computer file, stream it, or maintain a lawful personal media workflow. It requires storage—MakeMKV says a typical DVD movie may require about 6 GB—and it does not preserve the normal living-room disc experience in every workflow. Results can still depend on the drive, firmware, and disc protection. Use it only in ways permitted by the law where you live; rules on circumvention and format-shifting differ by jurisdiction.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the medium: determine whether it is DVD-Video, Blu-ray, a data DVD, a home-recorded disc, or a copied disc.
- Read the disc marking: identify Region 1–6, Region 0, All, or an unclear label.
- Check the player: identify its sales market and, on a computer, its current region setting.
- Protect the change count: do not switch regions until you are confident the disc is correctly identified.
- Check video compatibility: investigate PAL/NTSC and television support, especially with European, Australian, Japanese, and Latin American imports.
- Try another legal playback path: use a compatible player, second drive, VLC, or a lawful MakeMKV workflow.
- Isolate hardware failure: test a known-good disc and the suspect disc in another compatible drive. Clean the disc, update or reinstall manufacturer playback software, and contact the manufacturer if appropriate-region discs still fail.
What not to assume
- A disc from your country cannot be imported, mislabeled, or repackaged.
- Region 0/All guarantees playback on every television and player.
- VLC can bypass every drive-level region restriction.
- You can always change the region back without consequence.
- A region-free player supports every PAL/NTSC combination.
- Firmware flashing is a safe default fix. It can damage a drive, void support, and leave video-format problems unresolved.
