The closest documented clue is scripted direction for Sheldon Cooper’s smile, which the show’s writers made deliberately awkward. That is a character choice written into the script, not a report about the actor’s own mouth or any personal decision he made.
What the script actually says
The screenplay copy for The Big Bang Theory episode 204, “The Griffin Equivalency,” is the only documented on-page clue. While Sheldon is trying to smile, Howard Wolowitz tells him, “Try less teeth.” The stage direction that follows reads: “SHELDON CLOSES HIS LIPS. IT’S STILL BIZARRE.” The copy is hosted by The Script Savant and labeled as a September 15, 2008 final draft.
Two points matter here. First, the line is spoken by Howard, a character, to Sheldon, a character. It is a joke inside the episode, not a real-life explanation from Parsons. Second, the direction treats the smile as something the writers wanted to look odd. That fits Sheldon’s established comic rigidity: he is a man who performs emotions by rule rather than instinct.
What the script does not show
- It does not show that Parsons had a dental condition, cosmetic treatment, or any other reason for his teeth to look as they do on screen.
- It does not show that Parsons chose to conceal his teeth. A screenplay records written direction. It does not record how an actor delivered a line or what he decided on set.
- It is one line in one episode. It does not establish a pattern across the series, and it should not be stretched into a claim about how Parsons smiled in general.
What Parsons and the show’s archives have said
Two other sources are commonly cited. A CBS Boston question-and-answer feature with Parsons, published March 28, 2012, identifies him as the actor who plays Sheldon. Its published text does not discuss his teeth or his smile. The Television Academy Foundation’s archival page for the show, which is part of its interview collection, also does not address his teeth.

Silence in these sources is not proof that no explanation exists. It does mean that no direct statement from Parsons about hiding his teeth has been found, and no verified quote on the subject has been attributed to him. Any article that presents a personal explanation as fact is going beyond the evidence.
Where the premise comes from
The question appears to grow out of viewer impressions. In one online discussion, a commenter wondered whether Parsons appeared to have a shorter upper row of teeth. That is one person’s observation of a television image. It is not evidence about the actor, and it cannot be checked against any record about his dental history. No published statistic on dental appearance or viewer opinion about his smile was identified, so any percentage or survey figure attached to this question would be unsupported.

How to weigh each kind of evidence
| Source | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Episode 204 screenplay copy (September 15, 2008 final draft) | Sheldon’s smile was written as awkward and comic, with the line “Try less teeth” | Parsons’s dental status, cosmetic work, or any personal choice to hide his teeth |
| CBS Boston Q&A (March 28, 2012) | Parsons is the actor who plays Sheldon | Anything about his teeth or smile; the text does not discuss them |
| Television Academy Foundation show page | Archival information about the show and its interviews | Anything about Parsons’s teeth; the page does not address the subject |
| Online viewer comment | One person’s impression of the screen image | Any fact about the actor’s teeth or intentions; no personal explanation is stated |
What would change the answer
Only two kinds of evidence could move this beyond interpretation: a direct, attributable statement from Parsons about his smile or teeth, or reliable reporting that is specifically about him rather than about the character. Until one of those exists, the accurate framing is that the show scripted Sheldon’s smile as bizarre, and that nothing establishes why Parsons looked the way he did on camera beyond that direction.
Readers who want to check the script themselves should look for the “Try less teeth” exchange in the copy from The Script Savant and compare it against the episode itself. Note that the screenplay’s wording may not match the final cut line for line.

Avoid diagnosing the actor or stating a dental or cosmetic history as fact. The question is about a character’s written expression, and the evidence supports answering only that part.
