Why Does FFmpeg Stop Sending Video to YouTube After a Few Hours?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no universal “few hours” cutoff established for FFmpeg streams to YouTube. The symptom alone does not reveal whether FFmpeg exited, its input stalled, its output or network connection failed, or YouTube reported an ingest or format problem. Match the time of the stoppage against FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages before changing the command.

Start with the evidence at the exact stop time

  1. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Find the stream health indicator and note each error around the stoppage, including its timestamp, exact wording, and severity. YouTube says red errors are critical and may inhibit an event; yellow errors may reduce quality. Unresolved errors continue to appear. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance explains the dashboard messages.
  2. Match that timestamp to FFmpeg’s log and process state. Determine whether the process exited, is still running but no longer reading frames, or continues reading while output has stopped or reported an error. These distinctions point to different parts of the pipeline; without the command and logs, a specific cause cannot be established.
  3. Check the input. Confirm that the source is still producing frames at the relevant time. For a live source or capture device, check whether the command applies a low -readrate or -re setting.
  4. Check YouTube’s reported issue. If Live Control Room reports an incorrect format, verify the video and audio formats. If it reports starvation, investigate continuity of the incoming video rather than assuming the message identifies the root cause.

Use the symptom to identify which part of the pipeline failed

Compare three points: the source, FFmpeg, and YouTube ingest. This is a practical diagnostic approach, not a formal protocol prescribed by YouTube or FFmpeg.

What you observe at the stop time What it helps distinguish Next check
FFmpeg has exited The process stopped rather than merely losing a viewer-facing picture. Read the final log lines and the exit status. The supplied symptom alone does not identify why it exited.
FFmpeg remains active, but the input has no new frames The source may have stalled even though the process is still running. Inspect the source and input-related log messages. Check read-rate options if the input is live.
FFmpeg continues reading, but output reports an error or stops progressing The failure may be on the output or network leg. Inspect the output error and protocol in use before changing reconnect or buffering options.
YouTube reports an ingest, health, or format error YouTube has a timestamped signal about what it is receiving, but that signal may not explain the upstream cause. Use the exact dashboard message and, if applicable, the API health description to focus the investigation.

Read YouTube’s health messages carefully

Video starvation

YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes videoIngestionStarved as YouTube not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. It is evidence of an incoming-video continuity problem from YouTube’s perspective, not proof of whether the source, FFmpeg, or network caused it. See the LiveStreams API health and configuration descriptions.

Incorrect format

If Live Control Room reports an incorrect-format error, YouTube’s guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected combination for proper ingestion. Treat this as a targeted check when the dashboard reports a format problem, not as evidence that a format mismatch explains every stream that stops. Read YouTube’s error guidance.

Account and stream prerequisites

YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance covers account prerequisites and active-stream limits. Those are worth checking if the error points to eligibility or a limit, but the guidance does not establish a normal few-hour cutoff for FFmpeg streams.

Check FFmpeg read-rate and reconnect options in context

FFmpeg documents -re and -readrate 1 as ways to control input reading speed. Its documentation cautions against applying a low read rate to an actual capture device or live stream because it may cause packet loss. Check the input type and the option’s placement in the command before using it as a fix; a read-rate setting is not a general remedy for every stoppage. See the FFmpeg documentation.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes options such as reconnect and reconnect_on_network_error for HTTP client input. These are not, by themselves, an automatic cure for an RTMP output failure to YouTube. Identify which connection failed and which protocol the command uses before applying a reconnect option. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Why the “few hours” timing does not prove a cutoff

The available official guidance does not establish a universal time after which YouTube stops accepting FFmpeg video. YouTube’s documentation about DVR says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; that is a viewer rewind limitation, not evidence that YouTube stops receiving the stream after a few hours. YouTube’s DVR guidance describes that limitation.

Troubleshooting: match the fix to the failure

  • The process exited: use the final FFmpeg log lines and exit status to find the immediate failure. Do not assume YouTube ended the stream if the local process stopped first.
  • The process runs but video input stops: check that the source still produces frames. If it is a live or capture input, review any low -readrate or -re setting against FFmpeg’s warning.
  • FFmpeg reads input but output fails: inspect the output-side error and protocol. Do not apply HTTP input reconnect settings as though they automatically repair an RTMP output failure.
  • YouTube reports starvation: use the timestamp to compare YouTube’s health message with input continuity and FFmpeg’s logs. Starvation describes insufficient incoming video, not its cause.
  • YouTube reports incorrect format: check for H.264 video and AAC audio as specified in YouTube’s guidance.
  • No matching dashboard error appears: the absence of a cited error does not identify the cause. Use the process state and FFmpeg log at the same timestamp to locate the point where frames or output stopped.

Without the FFmpeg command, version, source type, output protocol, and log from the stoppage, a more specific command change would be guesswork.
