Ariana Grande says she changes her vocal placement—speaking higher or lower—depending on how much singing she is doing, and has linked the habit to vocal health. That explains her own account of the shifts, not every perceived change across her career. It also does not settle the separate debate about accent and AAVE features: pitch and pronunciation are different things.
What did Ariana Grande say about her changing speaking voice?
After a clip from her Podcrushed appearance circulated in June 2024, Grande responded that the change reflected “Habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health 🙂 🍵.” She added that she intentionally changes her vocal placement “(high / low)” depending on how much singing she is doing, and said she has always done so. The Los Angeles Times quoted her post and reported on the viral clip.

That is Grande’s explanation of her own choices. It is not an independent medical assessment, and it does not establish one cause for every voice change listeners may hear in different interviews or years.
How can singing affect a performer’s speaking voice?
Vocal placement is a way of describing how a voice is produced and resonates; in everyday terms, it can contribute to whether speech sounds higher, lower, brighter, or fuller. A shift in pitch or placement does not by itself mean someone has changed their accent.
#1 Best Overall
Voice speech pathologist Sarah Schneider, interviewed by NPR, said performers with demanding vocal schedules may place their voices differently on busy days to support “stamina,” “endurance,” and “voice preservation.” She also cautioned that “Speaking higher isn’t a universal solution.” It is a strategy Grande says works for her, not a general prescription for singers. NPR’s report, hosted by CapRadio, includes Schneider’s explanation.
Did Wicked training change her voice?
Grande has described intensive preparation for her role in Wicked. In an interview quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she said: “I trained every day… to transform my voice, even — like, my singing voice — everything about me, I had to deconstruct to prove to them I could handle taking on this other person.” That supports the point that she deliberately trained and adapted her voice for a role. It does not prove that playing Glinda caused every shift in her ordinary speech across the years.

Is a changing voice the same thing as a “blaccent”?
No. A perceived shift in pitch or vocal placement is different from a claim about accent, dialect, pronunciation, or word choice. A clip in which Grande speaks higher or lower cannot, on its own, establish whether she is using features associated with African American English (AAVE).
A linguistic essay by Gina Atkins examined lyrics from thank u, next and two singles, discussing features it associated with AAVE, including variations in “yuh” and “yeah,” g-dropping, and selected consonant changes. The paper also noted limits to analyzing music by listening and concluded that the material could not definitively be labeled a blaccent from a linguistic point of view. Its findings concern selected lyrics—not a comprehensive analysis of Grande’s conversational speech or a settled consensus about the allegation. The essay is hosted by Macmillan Learning.

- Ariana Grande released her fourth studio album, Sweetener, in August 2018 via Republic Records
The cultural debate about AAVE is separate from Grande’s stated reasons for changing vocal placement. Neither her vocal-health explanation nor a pitch shift answers that debate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can the available evidence establish?
- Grande has publicly said she intentionally varies vocal placement and connected the habit to how much singing she is doing and to vocal health.
- A voice speech pathologist has described why performers may adjust placement for stamina and preservation, while stressing that speaking higher is not universally appropriate.
- Grande has discussed daily voice training and vocal transformation for Wicked; that is evidence of role preparation, not proof of a single cause for her everyday speech changes.
- The available material does not provide a longitudinal acoustic study establishing why her voice sounds different at particular points in her career, nor a clinical examination independently verifying her stated vocal-health rationale.
A 2026 descriptive study of selected YouTube interview speech reports features it associates with General American pronunciation, including rhotic /r/. Because it does not compare periods in her career, it cannot establish whether her speech changed over time or resolve the blaccent question. The study appeared in the Journal of English Language and Education, volume 11, number 2.
