A black screen at an MP4 handoff means the picture stopped somewhere between the file, the encoder, and YouTube’s ingest or playback path. The symptom alone does not identify which part failed, and the available documentation does not establish a kids-specific YouTube behavior that causes it. First check whether the encoder preview also goes black; that helps narrow where to investigate.
First isolate where the picture disappears
During the next handoff, compare the encoder’s preview with the picture viewers see on YouTube. Also note whether audio continues, how long the blackout lasts, and whether it happens at every file change. This is a practical way to narrow the fault across the source, encoding, and ingest stages—not a formal YouTube diagnostic procedure.

The exact cause cannot be determined without details such as the encoder and operating system, how files are switched, the files’ codecs and frame rates, and whether the stream uses RTMP or HLS.
Check the MP4 handoff and encoder output
Confirm each file can play through the transition
- Open both MP4s and confirm that the outgoing file reaches its end and the incoming file starts normally.
- Observe whether your playlist, scene, script, or other switching method restarts the media source or briefly removes it from the active output.
- Compare the encoder preview at the handoff. If it blacks out, concentrate on the source or switch; if it does not, look at the encoder output and ingest path.
Inspect output settings without treating them as a guaranteed fix
OBS notes that a consistent keyframe interval can help YouTube’s automatic quality selector transition smoothly between quality options. Check whether the interval is consistent in your encoder, but do not assume that changing it will fix a black frame at a file handoff: the guidance is about quality transitions, not proof of the cause of this symptom. OBS also explains that MP4 and MOV require finalization, while HLS uses separate TS files and a playlist describing how to read them. This is relevant context when inspecting a media pipeline, but it does not show that switching between completed MP4s should itself cause a blackout. OBS audio and video formats guide
If the stream uses HLS, verify its HLS-specific requirements
Do not apply these checks unless the stream actually uses HLS ingestion. YouTube Help specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST or PUT. Google’s HLS developer guide specifies muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and support up to 60 fps. Compare the actual outgoing segments and playlist with these requirements rather than assuming the stream uses HLS or changing unrelated equipment. Keep a short record while troubleshooting
For each affected handoff, note whether the encoder preview went black, whether audio continued, the blackout’s duration, whether the failure repeats, the switching method, and whether output uses RTMP or HLS. If using HLS, include what the outgoing segments and playlist did at that moment. These observations make it easier to focus on the stage where the picture first disappears; they do not substitute for stream logs or a configuration-specific diagnosis.
