A popular second explanation links the fruit to the gold in the story of Saint Nicholas. Neither account proves exactly when or where the custom began.
Why an orange was a special Christmas gift
For centuries, oranges were associated with wealth, and they were not an everyday fruit for many families in winter. The Smithsonian describes the orange as rare and expensive in late-nineteenth-century Europe. Journalist Dominique Foufelle, quoted by the Smithsonian, put it this way: “At the end of the nineteenth century in Europe, when the custom of gift giving for Christmas had spread, the orange was a rare and expensive fruit.”
That scarcity helps explain why an orange could make a memorable stocking treat. The Ashmolean Museum says poor Victorian children received stockings filled with fruit and nuts. This supports the broader tradition of giving food, but it does not show that every child received an orange or establish when oranges specifically entered stockings. The Natural History Museum notes that oranges, once reserved for the rich, are now common household fruit; oranges and lemons also became familiar Christmas ingredients.
Was the orange meant to represent gold?
A popular interpretation connects the orange to the gold in the Saint Nicholas story. In that account, the fruit symbolically recalls the gold given to help a family in need. It is a suggestive explanation, but the historical accounts available do not establish that Saint Nicholas’s story directly created the orange-in-the-stocking custom.

What Victorian Christmas traditions can—and can’t—tell us
The stocking itself had become part of Christmas tradition by the time of the 1823 poem “Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” later known as “The Night Before Christmas.” The Smithsonian cites the poem as evidence of the stocking tradition; it does not mention oranges in the stocking.
In Britain, the Victorian era also saw gift-giving shift from New Year toward Christmas. The Victoria and Albert Museum links broader changes in how people celebrated to industrial and infrastructure developments. That context helps explain Christmas’s growing importance, but it does not prove those changes caused the orange custom.

Which explanation is better supported?
| Explanation | What supports it | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Scarcity and value | Museum and Smithsonian accounts describe oranges as costly or uncommon for many European families, while the Ashmolean describes Victorian stockings containing fruit and nuts. | These sources do not identify the first stocking to contain an orange or show how widely the practice spread. |
| Saint Nicholas and gold | The Smithsonian describes the orange-as-gold idea as a popular explanation associated with the Saint Nicholas story. | It is an interpretation, not a documented chain proving the story originated the custom. |
The most careful answer is that both explanations may help account for the tradition: the orange was valuable as food, and it carried a symbolic association with gold. The exact first use and the custom’s regional spread are not established by these accounts, so it should not be treated as a universal practice with one proven origin.
