‘Keeper’ Review: Who Likes Creepy, Confusing Cabin-in-the-Woods Horror?

Keeper pairs a remote-cabin getaway with relationship-centered horror and uncanny imagery. It may suit viewers who enjoy slow-burn unease and ambiguity, but not those seeking quick pacing or tidy answers.

Keeper is best suited to horror viewers who enjoy a creeping sense of dread, relationship tension, and images that invite interpretation more than a neatly solved plot. It follows a couple on a weekend at a remote cabin, where the place’s past becomes part of the threat. If you want brisk momentum and clear answers to every strange detail, its deliberately suggestive approach may frustrate you.

What is Keeper about?

Liz, played by Tatiana Maslany, and Malcolm, played by Rossif Sutherland, take a weekend getaway at an isolated cabin. The trip turns unsettling as a sinister presence brings the cabin’s past into the couple’s present. NEON’s official description frames the film around that remote retreat and the threat it uncovers: NEON’s Keeper page.

Director Oz (Osgood) Perkins described it as a single-location cabin-in-the-woods story centered on two people’s first trip away together. In a pre-release CinemaBlend interview with Sarah El-Mahmoud, he called the aim “a horror movie about a relationship” and said the filmmakers wanted to take a recognizable genre shape and reshape it. That emphasis matters: the cabin is not just a setting for scares; the relationship is central to the film’s design.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

Viewers who like atmosphere and interpretation

Keeper should appeal to viewers who enjoy low-key unease, uncanny or surreal interruptions, and picking over clues after the credits. Maslany said she found the film entertaining but also wanted to study it and see what audiences would read into it. That is her response, not a guarantee that every ambiguity works, but it signals the kind of viewing the film may invite.

Some of the sampled reactions describe the movie as creepy, unpredictable, or an effective slow burn. The attraction is less a conventional chain of plot revelations than the sensation that something is wrong and the opportunity to interpret what the film’s details might mean.

Viewers who need pace and clarity may not

The same qualities can be drawbacks. Some sampled critics and audience comments complain that the pacing drags or that the strange elements fail to cohere; one critic argued that the weirdness does not add up, whether or not that is by design. Others felt the film explained too much. These are examples of a divided response, not a complete tally of opinion.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 51% Tomatometer from 114 reviews and a 40% Popcornmeter from 250+ verified ratings when accessed on October 4, 2026. Those scores are changing snapshots, not permanent measures of the film’s reception. The contrast between atmosphere and plot momentum, and between ambiguity and explanation, is a more useful guide to fit than treating either score as a verdict.
