“Kamehameha” has two distinct contexts: it is the name of Hawaiian ruler Kamehameha I, and the name of a recurring energy attack in Dragon Ball. Hawaiian historical sources gloss the king’s name as “The Lonely One.” Akira Toriyama said his wife named the fictional technique, with a later account describing the suggestion as a playful choice. The sources support a shared-name connection, not a claim that the attack was meant to honor the king’s history.
What does “Kamehameha” mean?
Hawaiian institutional sources give the name’s English gloss as “The Lonely One” or “the lonely one.” Go Hawaiʻi says the future king was born Paiʻea and took the name Kamehameha after the danger surrounding his birth had passed. The Hawaiʻi State Archives also identifies Paiʻea as his birth name and renders the later name as Ka-meha-meha, glossed “the lonely one.”
These are English glosses from historical institutions, not a full linguistic analysis. They do not establish a word-by-word derivation or pronunciation guide.
Who was Kamehameha I?
Kamehameha I was a Hawaiian ruler who united the islands under one kingdom. Go Hawaiʻi and Kamehameha Schools give 1810 as the year of unification. Kamehameha Schools identifies him as the founder of the House of Kamehameha, while the National Park Service describes his rule as taking place during major cultural and political change.

His exact birth year is uncertain. The National Park Service gives a range of estimates from 1753 to 1761 and notes November 1758 as one possibility, so a single year should not be treated as settled.
Kaʻiwakīloumoku is a separate chiefly epithet, not another meaning of Kamehameha. Kamehameha Schools’ Hawaiian Cultural Center translates it as “The ʻIwa That Hooks The Islands Together” and relates it to the ruler’s ability to bring islands together.

Why does Dragon Ball say “Kamehameha”?
In Dragon Ball, Kamehameha is the name of a recurring attack; the Dragon Ball Official Site documents examples from the Japanese Jump Comics manga.
In an archived English translation of an interview, creator Akira Toriyama said, “My wife is the one who named the Kamehameha.” A 2019 SmartFLASH report, describing Toriyama’s written response to a Japanese television program, gives more detail: he was looking for a word using “kame” for Master Roshi’s attack, his wife suggested “Kamehameha,” and he found the idea amusing and used it. The fuller anecdote is reported secondhand, so it is best attributed to that account.
