Why Disney Suspended Jimmy Kimmel—and Why the Decision Was Controversial

Disney cited Kimmel’s comments when it announced his show’s return, while critics said FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s remarks raised concerns about government pressure. Here’s what happened and what remains disputed.

Disney suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2025 after comments by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr about Kimmel and possible regulatory remedies. Disney later said it considered some of Kimmel’s comments “ill-timed and insensitive” after speaking with him. Critics, meanwhile, argued that Carr’s remarks could pressure broadcasters over political speech. The FCC disputed one central version of that allegation, saying it had not threatened to revoke licenses if Disney did not fire Kimmel. Those competing accounts—not a settled court finding—are why the suspension became so controversial.

What happened to Jimmy Kimmel Live!?

The suspension unfolded over several days in September 2025. Carr’s public comments came first; Disney announced the show’s return on September 22, and Kimmel was back on air the following night.

  1. September 17: Carr made public remarks calling for action over Kimmel’s comments and referring to possible FCC remedies. The Congressional Record later reproduced Carr’s phrase, “we can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
  2. September 22: Disney announced that the program would return the next day. The company said it had held “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel and viewed some comments as “ill-timed and insensitive.”
  3. September 23: Kimmel returned and criticized Carr’s remarks as censorship. ABC News reported on the return and Carr’s comments about possible FCC remedies.
  4. September 24: The Senate Commerce Committee called on Sinclair to return the show and said Sinclair was still preempting it, despite ABC’s return announcement.

Why did Disney suspend the show?

Disney’s public explanation focused on its judgment of Kimmel’s comments. In the company’s September 22 statement, reported by ABC News, Disney said it had spoken with Kimmel and regarded some comments as “ill-timed and insensitive.” That is Disney’s stated rationale; it does not, by itself, establish every factor that informed the decision.

The timing made the decision harder to separate from Carr’s remarks. He had publicly called for action over Kimmel’s comments and referred to possible FCC remedies shortly before Disney announced the suspension. Critics saw that sequence as raising a serious concern about government pressure on a broadcaster. The timing supports why people questioned the relationship between Carr’s remarks and Disney’s action, but it does not prove that a particular threat legally caused the suspension.

What did Carr say, and what did the FCC say afterward?

The Congressional Record reproduces Carr’s “easy way or the hard way” remark and records a Senate resolution’s characterization of it as a threat. Senators also described Carr’s comments as threats against ABC, Disney, or their affiliates in a letter concerning his remarks.

The FCC later rejected a specific allegation. In its letter responding to senators, the agency said the claim that it “threatened to revoke broadcast licenses if Disney did not fire Jimmy Kimmel is simply incorrect.” That is the FCC’s account of what it did and did not threaten; it does not erase the fact that critics interpreted Carr’s public references to possible remedies as coercive.

Why is the suspension controversial?

It brought together two questions that should be kept distinct: why Disney said it acted, and whether a government official’s comments could put improper pressure on a broadcaster’s political speech.

  • Disney’s stated position: After conversations with Kimmel, the company considered some comments ill-timed and insensitive.
  • Critics’ concern: Carr’s comments about possible FCC remedies could be understood as pressure on a network and its affiliates over speech. Senators framed the remarks as threats.
  • The FCC’s response: The agency said it had not threatened to revoke broadcast licenses if Disney did not fire Kimmel.

The dispute is therefore not simply a matter of whether Disney had the power to make a programming decision. It is also about how a regulator’s public statements may be perceived when broadcast licenses are part of the regulatory context. The sources cited here document the competing claims and the ensuing public dispute, not a final judicial determination that the FCC acted unlawfully or that a specific threat caused Disney’s decision.

Did the show return everywhere at once?

No. ABC’s announcement that the show would return on September 23 did not mean every station carried it immediately. The Senate Commerce Committee said Sinclair continued preempting the program after ABC announced its return. The committee’s statement establishes that reported continuing preemption; it does not establish the schedule or carriage decision of every affiliate.

What is established—and what remains unresolved?

The public record described in these sources establishes the sequence of Carr’s remarks, Disney’s return announcement and stated reasoning, Kimmel’s return and criticism, and the dispute over Sinclair’s continued preemption. It also establishes that senators characterized Carr’s comments as threats while the FCC denied that it threatened license revocation if Disney did not fire Kimmel.

These sources do not establish a final court ruling on whether the suspension or the FCC’s conduct was unlawful. Nor do they settle the causal question of whether Carr’s remarks determined Disney’s decision. The responsible account is to report Disney’s explanation, the critics’ interpretation, and the FCC’s denial as attributed positions rather than present any one as a final legal finding.
