There is no publicly stated, specific strategic reason explaining why Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to speak with Lex Fridman. The public record shows that Modi welcomed the conversation and invited people to watch, while Fridman said he wanted to understand an influential leader amid global conflict and rapid technological change. The interview offered time for a wide-ranging discussion of Modi’s life and public career; claims about a hidden political or media strategy go beyond what the available statements establish.
What happened in the Modi–Fridman interview?
On March 15, 2025, India’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that Modi had recently recorded a conversation with Fridman, describing it as a three-hour discussion. The announced subjects included Modi’s childhood, formative years in the Himalayas and journey in public life. Modi called it a fascinating conversation and encouraged people to watch when it was released the next day. The PMO announcement records the format, topics and invitation.
The episode was released on March 16. Fridman’s episode resource page provides links to video and caption or transcript materials in English, Hindi and Russian. On March 23, the PMO said the multiple language versions were intended to make the conversation accessible to a wider audience. Its multilingual-access update states that purpose.
What reasons did the participants give?
Fridman described his aim as understanding Modi
In introductory remarks reproduced in the PMO-hosted English rendering, Fridman presented Modi as an influential leader at a time of global conflict and technological change. He said his aim was to understand people’s virtues and flaws: “Whether in front of the camera or behind it, my goal is always to understand the human mind—both its virtues and its flaws.” The PIB rendering of the conversation provides the statement. It explains Fridman’s stated reason for conducting the interview, not Modi’s reason for accepting it.

Modi spoke publicly about the topics and encouraged viewers to watch
In the announcement, Modi said the conversation covered subjects including his childhood, years in the Himalayas and public life, and invited people to tune in. Near the end of the conversation, he told Fridman: “Maybe today, I touched upon several topics for the first time because I usually keep these things very personal.” That remark supports describing the exchange as a personal, long-form discussion; it does not reveal a private calculation about why Modi agreed.
Was the interview intended to reach an international audience?
A broader audience is a plausible benefit, but it is not an explicitly stated reason Modi chose Fridman. The three-hour format allowed room for a personal conversation, and the PMO said language versions were made available to improve accessibility. Together, those facts make it reasonable to infer that the interview could reach people beyond a single language community. They do not establish a specific target audience or show that audience reach was the deciding factor.

The premise that Fridman is “little known in India” is also unverified by the cited material. The PMO called him a renowned podcaster and AI researcher; Fridman’s own page describes him as a podcast host and MIT research scientist. Those descriptions establish his professional identity, not how familiar Indian audiences are with him. His episode page gives his own professional description.
What does the public record not establish?
The public statements cited here do not say that Modi chose Fridman to avoid Indian journalists, bypass the press, appeal to a particular political camp or reach a specific demographic. Nor do they establish that the interview was arranged for a hidden strategic purpose. Those possibilities should not be presented as fact without evidence.

There was political criticism after the episode appeared. India Today reported that Kerala Congress called it “fully scripted,” while Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh criticized Modi’s appearance with a foreign podcaster and contrasted it with press conferences. These are attributed political reactions; the report does not independently verify that the interview was scripted or establish Modi’s reason for appearing. The strongest supported explanation is modest: Modi took part in a long-form conversation about his personal history and public life, and Fridman said he wanted to understand a consequential leader. Modi publicly welcomed the interview and urged people to watch. The format and multilingual distribution could broaden its reach, but no public statement cited here confirms that international audience-building—or any other specific strategic objective—was Modi’s motive.
