Netflix announced in October 2022 that Cavill would finish Season 3 as Geralt of Rivia and that Liam Hemsworth would take over the role for Seasons 4 and 5. Later comments from showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich pointed to Cavill’s plans for other roles, while long-running reports about creative differences remain unconfirmed context—not a proven single cause.
The short answer: Cavill left after Season 3, but the precise reason remains private
Netflix did not describe the change as a firing. Its announcement presented the recast as a planned handoff: Henry Cavill would leave The Witcher after its third season, and Liam Hemsworth would play Geralt for the show’s remaining two chapters.
Cavill’s own statement was similarly measured. He said he would be “laying down” Geralt’s medallion and swords for Season 4, praised Hemsworth, and wished him well in taking up the role. However, Cavill did not identify a specific disagreement, scheduling conflict, or other reason for his departure.
That makes the most responsible answer narrower than many online explanations: Cavill voluntarily departed, apparently in connection with other professional plans and commitments, but neither he nor Netflix publicly confirmed one definitive cause.

What Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said about Cavill’s departure
In later interviews, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said Cavill “had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to.” She also indicated that the issue had been discussed over time and characterized the relationship between Cavill and the production respectfully.
Hissrich’s comments support the idea that Cavill’s decision involved his broader career plans. They do not establish that one particular project forced him out, nor do they prove that a behind-the-scenes dispute was irrelevant. They do, however, make it misleading to state as fact that Netflix simply fired him.
Hissrich also pushed back against reducing the situation to the phrase “creative differences.” In the entertainment industry, that expression can cover many different kinds of disagreement, including story direction, working arrangements, scheduling, performance choices, or long-term plans. It is not, by itself, evidence of a specific conflict.
Did Cavill leave because of creative differences?
Possibly, but it has not been publicly confirmed as the sole or decisive reason.

Those details make creative tension a relevant part of the background. Cavill was known to care about the source material, and viewers had noticed disagreements between the novels and the television adaptation. But the public record does not contain a definitive statement from Cavill saying that he left because the writers or producers had moved too far from the books.
The careful conclusion is therefore:
Creative disagreements may have contributed to the situation, particularly given Cavill’s interest in the books and Geralt’s characterization. But that remains reported context and informed speculation, not a publicly confirmed single-cause explanation.
Why the books became part of the conversation
The Witcher television series is adapted from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and short-story collections. Cavill’s comments about honoring the source material made the books central to discussions about his portrayal of Geralt and the show’s creative direction.
Viewers who want to compare the adaptation with its source can start with The Witcher Stories boxed set, which collects The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny—the short-story volumes that establish Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri, and the world before the main saga. The books help explain why some fans interpreted Cavill’s concerns as more than ordinary actor preferences, although they still do not prove why he left the series.
Was Superman the reason Henry Cavill left?
Cavill’s return as Superman was announced shortly before his Witcher departure, so scheduling and franchise priorities quickly became a popular explanation. The timing made the theory plausible, but timing alone does not prove causation.
Cavill later lost the Superman role after DC Studios changed direction, and he still did not return to The Witcher. That development weakens the claim that Superman, by itself, was the confirmed reason for the recast.

A more accurate description is that Superman-related scheduling speculation became part of the public conversation. Hissrich’s later explanation referred more broadly to Cavill’s plans for other roles rather than identifying Superman as the sole cause.
Was Henry Cavill fired?
There is no public confirmation that he was fired. Netflix’s announcement and Cavill’s statement both described a departure and a change of actor, not a dismissal. Nothing in the available statements establishes that Netflix rejected a demand, forced Cavill out, or terminated his contract against his wishes.
That does not mean every private detail is known. Entertainment productions involve contracts, negotiations, schedules, and creative decisions that may never become public. It means only that stronger claims require evidence that has not been provided by the people directly involved.
Why did Netflix choose Liam Hemsworth?
Netflix chose to continue the story with a new actor rather than end the series or reboot the character. Hemsworth was already well known for The Hunger Games films and other action-oriented work, giving the production an actor with a recognizable profile and experience in large-scale genre entertainment.
Netflix’s later coverage also described Hemsworth as a longtime fan of the Witcher games and the character. That connection was useful when introducing him to an audience likely to be protective of Geralt and strongly attached to Cavill’s performance.

Hemsworth acknowledged the pressure of taking over a role identified so closely with another actor. His stated approach was not to copy Cavill exactly, but to create his own version of Geralt while retaining the character’s essential identity. That is an important distinction: the production treated the change as a recasting, not as the arrival of a different Geralt in the story.
How does The Witcher explain the change?
The series does not replace Geralt with a new character or write him out. Season 4 continues with Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as the central trio, with Hemsworth playing the same Geralt of Rivia that Cavill portrayed in the first three seasons.
Season 4 begins after the events of Season 3 and proceeds as a continuation of the existing story. The audience is expected to accept the visual recast rather than receive an elaborate in-universe explanation for why Geralt suddenly looks different.
Netflix produced Season 4 alongside a fifth and final season, positioning Hemsworth as Geralt for the remaining chapters rather than as a temporary stand-in. As of Netflix’s December 2025 coverage, all eight Season 4 episodes were streaming and Season 5 was identified as the final season.

What should—and should not—be stated as fact?
- Supported: Cavill’s final season as Geralt was Season 3.
- Supported: Hemsworth took over the role for Seasons 4 and 5.
- Supported: Cavill’s public announcement did not give a precise reason for leaving.
- Supported: Hissrich later said Cavill had plans for other roles he wanted to pursue.
- Reasonable but unconfirmed: Creative disagreements may have contributed, given Cavill’s interest in the books and Geralt’s characterization.
- Unproven: Cavill was definitively fired.
- Unproven: Netflix rejected specific demands from Cavill.
- Unproven: Superman was the sole reason for the departure.
- Incorrect framing: Hemsworth plays a different Geralt. He is a new actor playing the same character.
What happened to The Witcher after Cavill?
The recast changed the series’ central performance but not its basic narrative arrangement. Geralt remains connected to Yennefer and Ciri, and the fourth season continues the story rather than restarting it. The creative and commercial challenge for Netflix was therefore to preserve continuity while asking viewers to accept a different interpretation of a familiar character.

That is also why comparisons between the two actors are unavoidable but not a substitute for the factual answer. Whether viewers prefer Cavill’s version, Hemsworth’s version, or the wider adaptation is a matter of response. It does not resolve the private circumstances of the original departure.
Bottom line
Henry Cavill left The Witcher after Season 3, and Liam Hemsworth replaced him as Geralt for the final two seasons. Cavill and Netflix never publicly supplied a detailed, definitive reason. The strongest official explanation is that Cavill had plans for other roles and commitments he wanted to pursue. Creative differences may have been part of the background, and Superman was part of the surrounding speculation, but neither has been established as the single proven cause.
