Rossum also described real friendships among the cast and crew and urged viewers, “Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.” The letter’s warmth makes clear that she valued the series, but it does not itself specify why she decided to leave. Did the earlier pay dispute make her leave?
Rossum had a salary dispute before season eight and returned to the series after renegotiating. That dispute is part of the timeline, but the contemporaneous reporting does not establish it as the reason she left after season nine. How did Shameless write Fiona out?
Fiona was given a departure rather than being killed off. Wells said the writers were reworking the season’s closing episodes so her exit would fit the story and leave room for future storytelling.
