Duck Dynasty ended in 2017 after 11 seasons, according to CBS Philadelphia. Phil Robertson’s 2013 controversy over comments in a GQ interview came years earlier; the available reporting establishes that sequence, not that the controversy caused the show to end.
What did Phil Robertson say in the 2013 interview?
The controversy followed a GQ interview published in December 2013. ABC News reported that Robertson described homosexual behavior as sinful and quoted him grouping it with other conduct he considered sinful. The excerpts below are ABC News’s quotations from the interview, not a full transcript.
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there,” he said. “Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”
Robertson also said, as ABC News quoted him: “We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job,” he added. “We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus, whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?” ABC News reported the remarks on December 19, 2013.

How did A&E respond?
A&E said Robertson’s views in the interview were his personal beliefs and did not reflect the series. The network also said it supported the LGBT community and placed him on indefinite hiatus from filming. ABC News reproduced A&E’s statement:
“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series ‘Duck Dynasty.’ His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

The indefinite filming hiatus did not last. The Associated Press later reported that A&E reversed the suspension within a few weeks. That reversal is not evidence that the controversy had disappeared or that everyone accepted Robertson’s remarks. At the time, his family described the comments as coarse while saying his beliefs were grounded in the Bible. The AP’s retrospective account describes the reversal.
What did Robertson say afterward?
In a September 2014 interview with ABC News, Robertson said, “I don’t hate anybody.” He also discussed his book, unPHILtered: The Way I See It, as a place where he addressed the comments. These are his later characterizations of the dispute; they should not be mistaken for a retraction of the 2013 remarks.
