Beverly Ortega left Grant Ellis’ season of The Bachelor because she developed appendicitis and needed emergency surgery. She became ill before a planned one-on-one date, went to the hospital and did not return to filming.
What happened before Beverly left?
Ortega told the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast that she woke from a nap with stomach pain and began vomiting. At first, she wondered whether she had food poisoning, but the symptoms continued. She said she was taken to a hospital, where she received IV fluids and morphine.

According to Ortega, after about three hours in the emergency room, a doctor diagnosed appendicitis and told her she needed emergency surgery. Recounting the symptoms, she said: “I knew something was not right. I know my body, I listen to my body, and something was not okay.” Her account of the doctor’s words was: “You have appendicitis and you’re going to need emergency surgery.”
Why didn’t she return to the show?
The illness interrupted Ortega’s planned one-on-one date with Ellis. The episode initially told the other contestants that she had been very sick and would not be coming back; it did not give the diagnosis on screen. Ortega later supplied that explanation in her podcast interview. The Los Angeles Times reported that she became ill on a Tuesday, had surgery Wednesday and flew home from California by Friday, with her mother traveling to help her. That chronology is reported by the newspaper, rather than confirmed by medical records.

How did Beverly feel about leaving?
Ortega said she wanted to stay and was sad to leave without saying goodbye to Ellis or explaining what had happened. The Los Angeles Times reported that she described the emotional recovery from leaving as taking about a month and a half. She also said she and Ellis had moments that were not shown in the broadcast; that is her recollection of their relationship and filming experience.
