Captain Gantu was considered for Disney’s 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch, but director Dean Fleischer Camp said the character “just didn’t work so well in live action.” The filmmakers explored including him, then chose to leave him out so the adaptation could focus more deeply on Lilo and Nani’s relationship.
Why was Captain Gantu left out?
Camp gave a creative, story-focused explanation: Gantu did not fit the live-action approach the filmmakers were pursuing. In a 2025 interview with CinemaBlend, he said, “Gantu was one of those things that just didn’t work so well in live action.” He added, “We explored it a bit, but ultimately we had to make the decision.”
Camp stood by the omission because he wanted to ground the characters and give the sisters’ emotional story more space. As he put it, making room for greater emotional depth between the sisters meant freeing up “real estate” for that breathing room. The point, in his account, was what best served this version of the story—not a stated production-cost or CGI problem.
How the remake’s priorities differed
Disney describes the 2025 film as a modernized reimagining of its 2002 animated classic, rather than a scene-for-scene transfer. Camp said the filmmakers wanted to pay tribute to the original without making a “one-to-one literal translation.” Producer Jonathan Eirich likewise described considering what could be “better and new.”

That approach put the sisters’ lived experience in Hawai‘i at the center. Camp said the story takes place in contemporary society and that live action allowed the filmmakers to tell “a real story of a lived experience, growing up in Hawai’i, between these two sisters.” D23’s interview coverage also emphasizes the goal of grounding the story in real emotional stakes and the difficulty of everyday life.
What Gantu’s absence does—and doesn’t—tell us
Leaving Gantu out is one example of how adapting animation into live action can change the balance of a story. Camp’s explanation points to a choice about tone, character focus, and available story space: the filmmakers prioritized a more grounded account of Lilo and Nani’s relationship over transferring every character from the animated film.

The explanation available from Camp is creative, not financial. It does not establish that Gantu was omitted because CGI would have been too expensive. Nor does his absence establish whether he could appear in a future installment; the sources cited here do not confirm a sequel appearance or casting.
