He also says he wanted to guide a return to a story and characters he cared about, rather than leave the project to someone else. That is his creative rationale—not proof that every viewer will find the remake necessary.
Why DeBlois agreed to revisit the story
DeBlois has said he is skeptical of adapting animation into live action simply because the option exists. In a February 2025 interview with TheWrap, he put it plainly: “I myself am not a huge fan of the animation-to-live-action trend.” But Universal planned to revisit this particular story, and he loved its characters and world. He chose to take part because he felt attached to them and wanted to help shape the new version.
That distinction is central to his argument: the format change alone was not the purpose. Speaking to The AU Review, he said, “I’ve never been for remaking movies in a new medium without any real purpose to it.” He described this film as an opportunity to add a different experience, not to displace the original: “I’m not trying to replace it, but to bring a different experience.”
What he thought the new film could add
More room for relationships and mythology
DeBlois has described the original production as rushed. He and his collaborators had less time and money than they wanted, and some ambitions he shared with co-director Chris Sanders had to be set aside. In TheWrap interview, he said he approached the remake almost as if the animated film were a test screening: where could the story go deeper?

His answers included richer character relationships and more mythology. The story’s central choice helps explain the opportunity: Hiccup chooses friendship with Toothless instead of joining the fight against dragons, opening the possibility of a different future for humans and dragons. At a Directors Guild of America Q&A, DeBlois discussed that conflict between inherited hostility and understanding. His stated aim was to explore the world and bonds around that choice more fully, not to claim that the animated version lacked them.
Action with greater physicality
DeBlois also saw live action as a way to make flying and other action feel more visceral and immersive. The goal was to let viewers experience the scale and physical presence of the world differently from an animated film. This is an intended effect he described in interviews, rather than an objective measure of which version’s action is better.

A grounded world that still feels like the same story
For the live-action production, DeBlois wanted grounded surroundings and believable performances while keeping the animated film recognizable. The dragon designs were part of that balancing act: the team looked to animals for naturalistic qualities but preserved the dragons’ silhouettes, colors and personalities. In an interview about the home release, he said Toothless retained defining features such as his large eyes, mouth and ear plates. The Moviefone interview discusses that design approach; the Associated Press likewise reported DeBlois’s aim to make credible dragons without losing their personalities.
How the adaptation differs in purpose from the original
| Dimension | 2010 animated film | 2025 live-action adaptation |
|---|---|---|
| Characters and relationships | The original story establishes Hiccup and Toothless’s bond. | DeBlois said he wanted to deepen relationships that the original production had less time to explore. |
| Mythology and world-building | The animated film introduces a world of conflict between humans and dragons. | DeBlois described the remake as a chance to add mythology around that world. |
| Action and flying | Animation presents the action through its own visual medium. | DeBlois’s stated aim was a more visceral, immersive experience of action and flight. |
| Familiarity and novelty | The original is the familiar version for returning fans. | DeBlois intended to retain recognizable elements while offering a grounded live-action interpretation to returning viewers and newcomers. |
These are differences in intention and medium, not a verdict that the later film improves on the earlier one. DeBlois said he hoped to reach people who grew up with the animated films and might now have families, as well as viewers new to the story. He wanted to preserve familiarity and nostalgia while broadening the experience.

Visual composition is part of his case
DeBlois’s animation background informs more than the dragon designs. At the DGA Q&A, he spoke about silhouettes, shot design and images that change as the camera moves, connecting his interest in composition to why he entered filmmaking: “Part of what drove me into the film business is just I love to draw.” He described working on the visual approach with cinematographer Bill Pope, costume designer Lindsay Pugh and production designer Dominic Watkins.
That emphasis helps clarify why he did not frame the adaptation as simply reproducing animated scenes with real-world textures. His stated ambition was to carry the original’s visual identity into a different filmmaking language.

Does his explanation prove the remake was necessary?
No interview can settle that question for every viewer. DeBlois’s explanation establishes what he believed the project could do: expand material constrained by the original production, make its action feel different, and preserve the story’s identity in a grounded medium. Whether those changes amount to enough new value is a critical judgment. His argument is that the film had a purpose beyond the fact that live-action remakes are possible.
