Dave Portnoy’s 2022 launch of Brick Watch Company set off a dispute over whether its watches justified their US$2,399 launch prices. Watch enthusiasts questioned the design and value; Portnoy rejected a prominent critic’s claim about the watches’ cost and said he had paid for professional production. The available account documents the argument, but does not settle the watches’ manufacturing costs, production quantities, or margins.
What triggered the dispute?
In an account published December 11, 2022, Time+Tide reported that Portnoy launched Brick Watch Company with two collections: the Classic ’22 and Chrono-Diver ’22. The launch drew criticism from watch enthusiasts over the watches’ design and pricing. The article identifies menswear writer Derek Guy as a prominent critic and reports that he accused Portnoy of selling a watch that cost “$42” for much more. That figure is Guy’s reported accusation, not an independently established production cost.
Portnoy responded in a social-media video. As quoted by Time+Tide, he said, “News flash. I don’t know how to make ******* watches. I had to hire a company to make my watches.” He also said he had taken part in design decisions and cited a production-run cost of US$3.8 million. The article reports those statements; it does not independently verify the claimed cost or the manufacturing chain. Time+Tide’s December 11, 2022 account is the source for the launch details and the competing claims.
What did Brick launch?
Time+Tide described both models as carrying a US$2,399 launch price and a 100 m water-resistance rating. Those are launch-era figures reported in 2022, not confirmation of present prices, specifications, or availability.

Brick was reported to claim that the watches were designed, engineered, and built in the United States using Swiss and imported parts. Time+Tide’s writer said the exact extent of US manufacturing was unclear. The article does not establish where each component or stage of production took place.
What can be established about the cost claims?
The disagreement is not resolved by the figures in the article. Time+Tide reported that Portnoy showed what appeared to be an invoice and claimed the production run cost US$3.8 million, including an initial payment of US$852,000. The writer said the displayed information did not establish the order quantity or actual margins. Without those details, the article could not determine the per-watch cost or how much Brick might earn.

Time+Tide also raised American Watch Company as a possible supplier, drawing an inference from a warranty-page address and a payment structure described on that company’s FAQ. It did not confirm that American Watch Company manufactured Brick’s watches. Treat that connection as circumstantial speculation, not a verified supplier relationship.
Why did the price provoke debate?
The argument was about more than the movement inside either watch. Buyers considering a watch at this price may weigh movement type, case size, materials and finishing, water resistance, warranty and service support, as well as brand reputation and design. The launch-era details give some of those comparison points, but the 2022 account does not provide a consistent, independently tested comparison with competitors.

Time+Tide named the Monta Noble and watches from Oris, Longines, and Hamilton as alternatives. Blass argued that some alternatives offered better perceived build or comparable pricing. That is the author’s judgment in a 2022 article, not an independent test or a current ranking; current model availability, specifications, and prices should be checked before drawing a buying conclusion.
What is known about the brand’s stated purpose?
Time+Tide quoted Portnoy describing the idea behind the brand in a statement from the Brick Watch Company website: “I was walking out of a casino and was handed a watch as a gift by a stranger.” The article also reported Brick’s claim that 20% of proceeds would go toward supporting small businesses. That was the reported policy at launch; the source does not establish whether the policy continues or how much has been contributed.

What the 2022 account cannot answer
- Whether the watches’ present-day lineup, pricing, stock, or warranty terms match the launch-era report.
- The actual quantity produced, total manufacturing cost, or profit margin.
- The verified manufacturing origin or identity of the manufacturer.
- Whether Brick still donates 20% of proceeds, or the amount contributed.
Those limits matter when assessing whether a Brick watch is “worth it”: the reported launch specifications and price describe the initial offering, while the evidence does not establish present availability or resolve the core production-cost dispute.
