Rather, the series repeatedly turns adolescent embodiment into a supernatural problem: bodies are abducted, cursed, possessed, exposed, injured, transformed and mocked before the characters have learned how to understand or control them.
That is why the ghosts and aliens can feel like more than entertaining monsters. They give physical form to experiences that already make adolescence unsettling—puberty, sexual vulnerability, attraction, embarrassment, peer judgment and the fear of losing control of yourself. The series makes those anxieties grotesque, funny and occasionally heroic without reducing its teenage protagonists to helpless victims.
Spoiler and content note: This essay discusses the opening premise, recurring body-horror ideas and themes from the anime and manga. It includes references to abduction, sexual threat, crude anatomy jokes, nudity, injury, possession, bodily transformation and the magical removal or displacement of Okarun’s testicles. It avoids detailed ending spoilers. The anime’s first two seasons and later manga material should not be treated as identical sources.
The headline is a reading, not a quotation
There is no located primary source in which Tatsu literally says that teenage bodies are as horrifying as ghosts and aliens. The more accurate claim is interpretive: Dan Da Dan repeatedly makes adolescent bodies behave like haunted or alien territory.

That distinction matters. The official anime site describes the series as an “occult battle and adolescence” story. Its premise follows two high-school students who begin with opposite beliefs: Momo Ayase accepts ghosts but rejects aliens, while Ken Takakura—nicknamed Okarun—believes in aliens but not ghosts. Their attempt to prove each other wrong puts them in contact with supernatural forces that attack, invade or transform the body. At the same time, they are dealing with attraction, embarrassment, social exposure and the possibility of being rejected as strange.
If you want to examine how the original manga handles the timing of those reveals, Dandadan manga volume 1 is the most useful starting point. The first volume establishes the same collision of occult terror, alien intrusion and adolescent awkwardness that the anime adapts, while allowing readers to compare Tatsu’s panel rhythm with the show’s animation.
The first monsters are also bodily crises
The series does not begin with a detached mystery about whether the supernatural exists. Its opening conflicts immediately affect Momo and Okarun physically.
Momo is abducted and subjected to an invasive encounter with the Serpo aliens before her latent psychic ability awakens. The horror comes not only from the aliens’ appearance or intentions, but from the fact that Momo’s body becomes the site of an experiment and a threat. Her power emerges in the middle of a violation of personal boundaries. The supernatural is therefore connected to bodily autonomy from the beginning.
Okarun’s encounter with Turbo Granny works differently but produces a related fear. He is cursed, and his body becomes the vehicle for a frightening transformation. Instead of an outside creature simply attacking him and disappearing, the danger travels with him. His body can change, act differently and expose him to consequences he did not choose.
Those two incidents establish the series’ governing pattern:
| Supernatural device | Adolescent fear it literalizes |
|---|---|
| Abduction and invasive examination | Being treated as an object, losing privacy and having adults or outsiders define your body |
| Curse and possession | Feeling that your body is changing or behaving in ways you cannot control |
| Psychic awakening | Discovering unexpected capacity at the same moment that new responsibility arrives |
| Nudity, exposure and sexual menace | Being seen before you are ready, or having attention turn threatening |
| Injury and grotesque transformation | Realizing that the body is vulnerable, temporary and difficult to protect |
| Genital humor and anatomical displacement | Turning private bodily anxiety into an absurd public crisis |
This is body horror in a broader sense than simply showing a monster with too many limbs. The body is frightening because it is intimate, visible and unstable. It can be invaded from the outside, altered from within or made ridiculous in front of other people.
Why adolescence becomes supernatural horror
Teenagers already experience the body as something that changes faster than their self-image can keep up with. Puberty can feel like an unwanted transformation. Attraction can feel like exposure. A rumor can feel predatory. The fear of being judged can become the fear that everyone is looking directly at a physical defect or secret.

The series’ use of Okarun’s testicles is especially revealing in this respect. The device is deliberately ridiculous, but it is also a blunt reminder that masculinity, sexual development and bodily dignity can all become sources of panic. The joke works because the situation is humiliating. Okarun is not merely fighting a monster; he is trying to retain a sense of self while a deeply private part of his anatomy becomes part of a public supernatural emergency.
Momo’s storyline presents a different version of the same problem. Her body is threatened and sexualized by forces that do not respect her boundaries, but she is not defined by that vulnerability. Her psychic ability becomes a means of defense. The series allows the initial violation to matter without making it the final description of her character.
A user-contributed parental guide corroborates the pattern by flagging moderate sexual content, frequent crude sexual jokes, supernatural attacks, disturbing entities, bodily injury and the testicle-related plot device. That guide is useful as a viewer-facing warning, but it is not an official production document and cannot establish Tatsu’s intention. The thematic argument comes from the repeated structure of the story itself.

The ghost-versus-alien setup is more than a premise gimmick. It gives the series two distinct models of violation.
Ghosts and yokai are often associated with place, death, memory, unresolved emotion and the past refusing to stay past. Their threat can feel intimate. A haunted space knows something about the people who enter it, or carries an emotional history that the protagonists cannot simply fight with rational explanations. The body is endangered by what has been left behind.
Aliens represent a more external and clinical form of fear. They suggest abduction, experimentation, reproduction, invasion and an intelligence that treats human beings as objects of study. Their danger comes from being observed and handled by something that does not share human assumptions about privacy or dignity.
Momo and Okarun initially divide those categories between them: she is the believer in ghosts, he is the believer in aliens. But their experiment proves that neither category is safely imaginary. The characters must confront threats that exceed the explanations they started with, and the story makes both the intimate and the clinical forms of bodily terror real.

A curse can be psychological and personal. An alien encounter can be invasive and clinical. A romantic moment can be awkwardly exposing. A crude joke can arrive seconds after genuine terror. The series keeps moving between these registers rather than assigning one meaning to every creature.

The joke does not cancel the horror
Dan Da Dan is too funny to be described as uniformly bleak. Its signature rhythm comes from sudden shifts between horror, slapstick, romance, action and tenderness. The anime’s production discussions have emphasized the challenge of moving quickly between comedy and serious scenes, while members of the English cast have described the story as being concerned with agency and the journey through adolescence.
That tonal instability is not a failure to decide whether the series is frightening. It is part of how the series makes frightening experiences bearable. Comedy gives Momo and Okarun a way to continue living inside situations that would otherwise be paralyzing. They can be humiliated, transformed or terrified and still argue, flirt, make mistakes and protect each other.
In this context, a joke about anatomy can do two things at once. It can release tension for the audience, and it can show how the character is trying to regain social control after a supernatural event has taken it away. Laughter becomes a survival mechanism. It does not restore the body to normal, but it gives the characters a language for dealing with the abnormal.

The same principle explains why the series can place a grotesque monster beside an emotionally sincere scene without treating either one as fake. Horror establishes the vulnerability. Comedy prevents vulnerability from becoming total defeat. Romance and friendship then give the characters reasons to keep acting rather than merely reacting.
Romance is part of the horror architecture
Momo and Okarun’s relationship is not a detachable subplot running alongside the monster battles. Their attraction develops while both are managing curses, powers, social embarrassment and the fear of being perceived as different. The official synopsis frames the story as an adolescence narrative and asks whether their supernatural partnership might become a fateful romance.
That relationship changes what it means for the body to be seen. At the beginning, being seen is frequently threatening: an alien may inspect you, a curse may expose you, or classmates may judge you. Gradually, being seen by another person can also become a source of recognition. Momo and Okarun do not stop feeling embarrassed, but mutual trust gives embarrassment a less destructive meaning.
This is where the series’ body horror becomes a story about agency. The protagonists do not gain complete control over their bodies or powers. They are still surprised, injured and frightened. But they increasingly make choices about how to use what has happened to them. Momo’s psychic ability becomes defensive and protective. Okarun’s transformation becomes a source of strength that carries responsibility as well as danger. Their allies turn private bodily crises into collective problems that can be confronted together.
The distinction between vulnerability and helplessness is crucial. Dan Da Dan repeatedly shows that the body can be violated without concluding that the person inside it has been erased. The characters remain capable of judgment, resistance, affection and ethical action.

Tatsu’s monsters are not only threats
The creator’s comments support the idea that the series is interested in more than demonizing its supernatural beings. Tatsu has described the concept as a confrontation between monsters and has credited Sadako vs. Kayako as an inspiration for making supernatural threats collide. He has also discussed giving monsters histories and leaving readers with warmth and hope.
That approach complicates a simple humans-versus-monsters reading. If strange beings have histories, then the frightening body in front of the protagonists may also be the visible result of loneliness, grief, exploitation or unresolved pain. Recognition does not make every threat safe, and empathy does not remove the need for self-defense. But it prevents the series from treating difference itself as evil.
The balance is also visible in Momo’s characterization. In a Manga Plus interview, Tatsu discussed repeatedly redrawing her to make her as cute as intended and compared her heroic core to Superman’s commitment to helping people. The point is not that Momo is only an attractive design or only a powerful fighter. Her defining quality is the decision to help, even when her own body and circumstances are frightening.

How the anime intensifies the effect
Science SARU’s adaptation makes the contrast between bodily terror and youthful energy especially pronounced. Animation can move from an exaggerated facial expression to a disturbing transformation, then from a violent impact to a quiet reaction, in the space of a few cuts. The result is a physical experience of the series’ tonal argument: fear and embarrassment occupy the same body.
Director Fuga Yamashiro has discussed the importance of rhythm and the adaptation’s abrupt movement between comedy and seriousness. Later, director Abel Gongora described preparing for darker second-season material by studying horror films and aiming for the underground setting and Evil Eye flashbacks to feel frightening and sad. Those comments help explain why the show’s horror is not limited to monster design. Atmosphere, timing and emotional aftermath are equally important.
For current adaptation context, the official anime site has listed Season 3 for broadcast in 2027, but the cited announcement does not provide a precise premiere date. That timing is subject to change. The manga is ongoing, and later manga material should be discussed separately from what the first two anime seasons have adapted.

If Dan Da Dan only used adolescent bodies as targets for humiliation, its body horror would eventually become cruel or monotonous. What keeps the idea alive is the counterweight of agency.
Momo and Okarun are not protected from embarrassment, but they are not abandoned inside it. They find allies. They learn to cooperate. They challenge one another’s assumptions. They use powers that initially seem like curses or violations to defend people who are even more vulnerable. Their bodies remain unstable, but their relationships become more dependable.

This is also why the series’ warmth matters. Tatsu’s interest in giving monsters backgrounds and hope echoes the protagonists’ own movement from fear toward recognition. The supernatural world is not made harmless; it is made emotionally legible. A viewer can understand a creature’s pain and still acknowledge its danger. In the same way, a teenager can feel alienated from a changing body and still learn that the body is not an enemy to be discarded.
The ultimate argument is therefore not that teenagers are monsters. It is that adolescence can make the body feel monstrous before a person has learned how to inhabit it. Dan Da Dan externalizes that feeling through ghosts, aliens, curses and psychic battles. Then it gives its characters the tools—humor, friendship, romance, courage and responsibility—to live through the transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Yukinobu Tatsu actually say that teenage bodies are as horrifying as ghosts and aliens?
Not in the primary material located for this article. The phrase is a critical interpretation of how Dan Da Dan connects adolescence with abduction, possession, psychic awakening, sexual vulnerability, injury and transformation.
Is Dan Da Dan a horror series?
It is a hybrid of occult horror, science fiction, action, comedy and romance. Its monsters and body-horror imagery can be genuinely disturbing, but the series deliberately places slapstick, tenderness and character-driven humor beside the frightening material.
What content warnings apply?
Viewers should expect supernatural attacks, disturbing entities, bodily injury, crude sexual jokes, sexual threat, nudity, possession and body transformation. The exact presentation varies between the anime and manga. A user-contributed parental guide can help identify examples, but it should not be treated as an official rating.
Are the anime and manga at the same point in the story?
No. The anime’s first two seasons cover only part of the ongoing manga, and later manga material should be identified separately in any spoiler-heavy discussion. Season 3 has been listed for 2027, but no precise premiere date is supported by the cited official announcement.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Dan Da Dan makes teenage bodies frightening because adolescence already involves unwanted change, exposure and uncertain control. Ghosts and aliens turn those private fears into visible threats, while comedy, romance, friendship and heroic action show that vulnerability does not have to become helplessness.
