What the producer said about Damon Hill
In an interview published by BILD on October 4, 2026, producer Jochen Köstler said: “Natürlich haben wir Damon Hill angefragt. Aber ihn konnten wir nicht zum Mitmachen überreden.” A faithful translation is: “Of course we asked Damon Hill. But we couldn’t persuade him to participate.”

That confirms an invitation and an unsuccessful attempt to secure Hill’s participation. Köstler did not give Hill’s reason. The interview therefore does not establish whether Hill explained his decision, or what considerations shaped it. It would be speculation to attribute his absence to his rivalry with Schumacher or to any other personal or professional motive.
Which Schumacher documentary is this?
The film at issue is Schumacher ’94 – Die Geburt einer Legende (“Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend”), a 105-minute documentary about Michael Schumacher’s first world championship season, in 1994. BILD reported that it premiered on Netflix on the Friday before the interview’s October 4, 2026 publication; the article does not give a numeric premiere date.

It is a different production from SCHUMACHER, the 2021 Netflix documentary. The official Michael Schumacher website’s page for the 2021 film describes a broader account of his life and career and lists Hill among its interviewees. Hill’s appearance in that earlier documentary does not mean he participated in the new film focused on 1994.

What the filmmakers said about other people left out
Köstler said the production spoke with more people than appear in the finished film, aiming to hear from people close to the events. Director Christin Freitag said journalist Ralf Bach and former Benetton mechanic Jonathan Wheatley were not included. She said the team had no room for Wheatley’s interview and that it fell out for storytelling reasons. Those comments explain the named omissions; neither director nor producer presented them as the reason Hill is absent.

How the film recreated racing scenes
Freitag also described recreating racing scenes with Schumacher’s original Benetton, which a collector loaned to the production. The crew tested platforms and hydraulic rigs to simulate movement, then put the car on a skateboard while two crew members shook a tire. It is a production anecdote, not a recommendation for a product or a claim that a particular rig is commercially available.
