Conan O’Brien wasn’t seriously accusing Jason Bateman of causing his parents’ deaths. He made an absurd, running joke about Bateman while responding to condolences from their friend Will Arnett—and said that joking around with close friends was part of how he grieved.
How the Jason Bateman joke began
After O’Brien’s father died, Will Arnett sent him a message of condolence. O’Brien recalled replying, “I blame Bateman.” He then made the joke more explicit: “Jason Bateman killed my father.”
Bateman was the target of a running gag among the friends, not the subject of a real accusation. O’Brien later explained, “None of this is real, but it’s this way of doing business and connecting.” The New Yorker’s February 20, 2026 interview gives O’Brien’s first-person account of the exchange and its context.
Why O’Brien joked while grieving
O’Brien described the humor as a familiar way to be with his friends during a painful time. “You know what’s weird? I swear to God, this is how I grieve,” he said. He also said his father would have enjoyed the joke: “In fairness, my dad would’ve loved this.”

O’Brien’s parents died three days apart, and he recalled continuing the Bateman joke after his mother died. That detail helps explain why the friends’ exchange became a running bit, but it does not make the accusation literal. This is O’Brien’s description of his own grief and friendships, not a general rule about how people grieve.

Arnett later recounted the exchange on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, including the follow-up jokes. When the absurd theory came up, Arnett said, “It’s not a terrible theory.” The Boston Globe’s December 12, 2025 coverage and E! News’ December 10, 2025 report describe the podcast exchange and O’Brien’s comments about grief.
