Colin Farrell said he and James’s mother, Kim Bordenave, were looking for a long-term-care setting for their son so they could help choose a place for him while they were alive and able to stay involved. The April 2025 report describes a search—not a confirmed move into a facility.
Why Farrell said the family was looking for long-term care
In an interview published by Candis and reported by Us Weekly on April 19, 2025, Farrell said he feared that if he and Bordenave both became unable to care for James, decisions about his future could be made without their input. He worried James could become a ward of the state and that the family might have no say over where he went. Read the report.
Farrell said the family wanted to find a setting while they were alive and healthy, where they could visit and sometimes take James out. He described the hope behind that planning this way: “We want him to find somewhere where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected.” That is the family’s stated aim, not a description of any particular provider or facility.
What is established about James’s care—and what is not
The 2025 report says Farrell and Bordenave were looking for a long-term-care facility. It does not establish that James had moved into one, identify a facility, or describe a placement decision. Farrell’s remarks explain the family’s concern and goal, not the outcome of the search.

James turned 21 in September 2024, according to the report. That timing places the story in the broader context of adult-care planning, but it does not mean disability supports automatically end at 21. Services, eligibility rules and transitions differ by location and individual circumstances.
Angelman syndrome and individual support needs
Angelman syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental condition. Possible features include developmental delays, intellectual disability, severe speech impairment, balance problems and seizures; people with the condition need lifelong care, according to The Washington Post’s medical explainer. Farrell described James as nonverbal but ambulatory in a December 2024 interview with ABC News, and stressed that Angelman syndrome varies across the spectrum. What Farrell has said about support and inclusion
In the ABC News interview, Farrell also discussed how some families encounter a shift or drop in support when a disabled child reaches adulthood. That is his account of a challenge some families face, not a universal rule about services in every jurisdiction.

Farrell has spoken publicly about his hopes for how people treat his son. “I want the world to be kind to James,” he told The Washington Post in August 2024. Read the interview.
The Colin Farrell Foundation says it supports people and families living with intellectual disability through education, awareness, advocacy and programs. Its stated priorities for its first innovation grant program include inclusive housing, integrated employment, accessibility tools and cross-sector partnerships. Questions families can raise when considering a care setting
Farrell and Bordenave’s search is not a comparison of facilities. For families exploring options, the person’s needs and preferences should guide conversations with qualified local providers. Useful questions include:
- What supports are available for the individual’s daily needs, communication and health?
- How does the setting support community participation and activities beyond the residence?
- How can family and trusted supporters stay involved, visit and take the person on outings?
- How does the provider learn and respect the person’s preferences, including when communication is nonverbal?
- Where is the setting, and how does its location affect access to family, services and community life?
These are starting points for a local, individual assessment—not claims about the setting Farrell’s family was seeking.
