The comment was understood as a reference to the September pager explosions in Lebanon. The on-air transcript records what was said and how the participants responded; it does not establish Girdusky’s private intent.
What happened on CNN’s NewsNight?
The exchange took place during a panel discussion about Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden. Girdusky said Hasan had been called an antisemite. Hasan replied that he supported Palestinians and was used to being called that. Girdusky then said, “Well, I’m hope your beeper doesn’t go off.” The transcript preserves the wording as spoken. CNN’s official transcript provides the record of the exchange.
Hasan asked, “Did you just say I should die?” Girdusky denied that was what he meant, saying, “I thought he said, Hamas. I apologize.” The remark was widely understood in contemporaneous coverage as an apparent reference to the September 2024 pager attacks in Lebanon associated with Hezbollah. That interpretation explains why the line was treated as a threat about a deadly attack, but the transcript alone cannot prove what Girdusky privately intended. The Associated Press and The Washington Post reported the connection to the attacks.
How did Abby Phillip and CNN respond?
Host Abby Phillip stopped the exchange, telling Girdusky, “Ryan, that is completely out of pocket.” Girdusky apologized on air. After a commercial break, Phillip apologized to Hasan and viewers. CNN subsequently said Girdusky would not be allowed back on the network; contemporaneous reports described the decision as a ban. AP’s account and The Washington Post’s report cover the network’s response.

Why did the beeper reference carry such weight?
In September 2024, pager and walkie-talkie explosions in Lebanon were associated with Hezbollah. Against that backdrop, telling Hasan—who had just said he supported Palestinians—that his “beeper” might go off sounded to many viewers like invoking the attacks against him. AP reported that the explosions killed 39 people. That death toll is AP’s reported figure; it should not be confused with an injury count. The AP report provides the contemporaneous context.
What the public record establishes—and what it does not
- Established by CNN’s transcript: the panel’s words, Phillip’s intervention, Girdusky’s on-air apology, and Hasan’s response.
- Reported by CNN and contemporaneous news coverage: CNN’s decision that Girdusky would not return to the network.
- An interpretation, not a proven private motive: that the beeper line referred to the Lebanon pager attacks. Coverage understood it that way, but the transcript cannot establish Girdusky’s internal intent.
