She recalled that her agents and others advised against it, but described the decision as her own. The account was reported from the second episode of the 2023 docuseries The Super Models.
Why Crawford said yes
Fashion photographer Herb Ritts approached Crawford about the project. She described him as a close friend and frequent collaborator. In the 2023 account, she said the idea appealed to her even though people around her, including her modeling agency, urged her not to do it.
“I don’t know, there was just something about it that intrigued me. So against the advice of my agents, I said ‘yes,’” she said, as quoted by The Independent.
What control she wanted
Crawford said she was less interested in a large payment than in having a say over the photographs and whether the story went ahead. Her recollection was: “You don’t need to pay me a lot of money. As long as I can have control of the images, and I wanted the right to kill the story if I don’t like it.” The Independent reported this as part of her account of negotiating the shoot.

Her account describes the safeguard she sought; it does not establish the exact terms of a contract. The Howard Stern Show’s 2015 coverage also reported that she recalled requesting approval of every image and the ability to kill the story if she was dissatisfied.
What the 1988 shoot involved
The photographs appeared in the July 1988 issue of Playboy. Vogue’s archive characterizes them as seminude. Crawford said she and Ritts combined the Playboy work with a trip to Hawaii for French Vogue, moving between the two shoots. That contrast helps explain why the decision stood out: she was a fashion model taking on a project that, as she recalled, did not fit the expected path for a Vogue model at the time.

Why the “manager said it would ruin her career” version needs care
The reporting supports that Crawford faced advice against posing from agents, her modeling agency and other people around her. It does not establish that one named manager told her the shoot would ruin her career. The 2015 Howard Stern Show coverage describes career and cosmetics-deal risks as part of the perceived stakes, but it does not verify a specific manager’s exact warning. The more precise account is that people around Crawford objected or urged caution because the shoot seemed out of step with her fashion career.

Her perspective in 1992
In a November 1992 Vogue profile, Crawford said the shoot had been thought through, “caused a sensation and made a statement,” and mattered to her partly because it could broaden her audience. The profile records her perspective at the time, not proof that the photographs caused a particular career outcome.

Her recollection in 2023
In the account reported by The Independent from The Super Models, Crawford said she never felt like a victim of the decision. She framed the important point as making her own choices and having control over them: “That’s the whole thing for me is, even if I make choices that other people disagree with or don’t like, if they’re my decisions and I have control of it, that’s empowering to me. Even if it’s doing Playboy. I never felt like a victim of that decision.” This is her description of her own experience, not a general claim about how models experience similar work.
Her later career-impact explanation
In September 2026, Just Jared reproduced highlights from a PORTER interview in which Crawford said, “The first time I did Playboy, I said, ‘I don’t want money. I want control’.” She also said she believed the shoot helped bring opportunities such as MTV and Pepsi and widened her reach beyond fashion. Those are her retrospective assessments; the reporting does not demonstrate that the shoot caused those opportunities. Just Jared reproduced the interview highlights, so its quotations should be understood as reported excerpts rather than independently checked against the full PORTER interview.
