He told Gizmodo he accepted Big Finish’s invitation for practical and creative reasons: acting is his livelihood, he still loved the character, he liked the scripts, and audio gave him a different way to explore the role.
What Eccleston meant by returning
Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 television revival season. When he reprised the role in 2021, it was his first time playing the Doctor again since that season—but in Big Finish audio drama, not in a new television appearance. The return discussed in the interview was Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Ravagers, released in May 2021.
Big Finish describes Ravagers as three adventures starring Eccleston, written by Nicholas Briggs: “Sphere of Freedom,” “Cataclysm,” and “Food Fight.” The product page lists a total runtime of 214 minutes and currently offers CD plus download and download formats. Big Finish: Ravagers.
Why he accepted the role again
Eccleston gave four reasons in James Whitbrook’s April 1, 2021 Gizmodo interview: paid work, affection for the Doctor, the quality of the scripts, and his enthusiasm for audio drama. He was candid about the practical side: “I’m an actor and the way I pay my mortgage and support my children, Albert and Esme, is by acting. So, it’s paid work. First and foremost.” He added that he had “a great love for the character” and valued “the quality of the scripts.”

His interest in the form was not incidental. Eccleston said he already did radio and audiobooks and found creative satisfaction in work centered on writing. “I love audio drama,” he said. “I’ve always been passionate about writing and writers.” Read the Gizmodo interview.
What audio let him do differently
For Eccleston, audio was an opportunity to revisit a character he had first played visually through voice and language alone. “There are no visuals,” he explained. “All you have is the word and your voice.” He felt he could explore the Doctor technically in vocal performance as well as return to the character.
He also described the writing as a balancing act: the scripts needed science and technology, humor, forward movement, canon references, and new characters, all in an economical form. These are Eccleston’s observations from the interview, not an independent account of the production process. He said the physical mannerisms he used on screen had to be restrained for audio, and that recording during the pandemic without the cast together could make ensemble work lonely.
His view of the Doctor, mystery and canon
Eccleston argued that the Doctor should remain partly unknowable, a quality he connected to the character’s ability to change physical appearance. He also pushed back against rigid limits on the character’s history: “If the show wants to survive going forward, it needs to explode the canon,” he said, calling strict rules about the number of incarnations “nonsense” and adding, “The imagination is limitless.”
Those comments speak to the creative freedom he wanted for Doctor Who; they do not change what his 2021 return was. It was a reprise in audio drama, rather than a return to the television series.

Big Finish’s Ninth Doctor range has continued beyond Ravagers. Its series page says Eccleston’s first three audio series featured him travelling solo, and that Billie Piper joined him as Rose Tyler in 2025. On August 11, 2026, Big Finish announced the release of Dark Tides, an audio adventure starring Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor and Piper’s Rose. That dated announcement documents ongoing audio work; it is not evidence of a television comeback.
