Chris Noth initially balked at returning as Mr. Big if the character was going to die. He ultimately agreed with showrunner Michael Patrick King that Big’s story had reached its end—and that his death could move Carrie Bradshaw into a new chapter. Noth and King also wanted Big and Carrie to share one final, silent moment rather than a sentimental exchange of dialogue.
Why did Mr. Big have to die?
For Noth, the decision came down to the character’s arc: he felt Big had nowhere meaningful left to go. In a Vogue interview published December 14, 2021, after the revival’s December 9 premiere, Noth said he trusted King’s writing, direction and editing. He explained his initial reluctance and eventual acceptance this way:
“All things end, and it was time for him to go, unless we’re gonna be doing Scenes From a Marriage, Sex and the City style. There was nowhere to go with it but six feet under.”
King offered the broader story rationale in a Vanity Fair interview published December 10, 2021. He called Big’s death the revival’s “origin story”: the loss would give Carrie a new journey, including a deeper focus on her relationship with herself. King framed it as a way to explore the idea that having loved and lost can still matter, and said Big’s departure would add to the character’s legacy rather than diminish it.

“Dying was the origin story.”
That is the creative explanation, not a claim that the Peloton bike caused a real-world medical event.
Why did Big and Carrie get one last look?
Noth said he and King did not want Carrie simply to discover Big dead without a final moment between them. They discussed a “Bonnie and Clyde moment”: the couple would look at one another, understand what was happening and avoid a corny farewell speech.

For Noth, the silence let the scene give the couple a final connection without spelling out its meaning. He said he was pleased with how it came together.

What happens in the episode—and did Peloton cause Big’s heart attack?
In the first episode of And Just Like That…, “Hello It’s Me,” Big has a heart attack after a Peloton workout and dies. The next episode, “Little Black Dress,” follows the funeral and memorial. The workout is a conspicuous plot detail, but the contemporaneous reporting does not establish that cycling caused his fictional heart attack.
Peloton responded to the storyline through cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, D.O., a member of the company’s health and wellness advisory council. As SELF reported in 2021, Steinbaum pointed to Big’s earlier cardiac event in Season 6 and his depicted lifestyle as likely factors, and suggested that his riding habit might have delayed the event. Those comments were part of Peloton’s response to a fictional plot, not independent medical findings about Big or evidence that exercise caused his death.

SELF also quoted Steinbaum saying, “More than 80% of all cardiac-related deaths are preventable through lifestyle, diet, and exercise modifications.” That figure is Steinbaum’s statement as reported in Peloton’s response; it is distinct from the separate World Health Organization estimate SELF cited about premature heart attacks and strokes.
