Chip and Joanna Gaines faced criticism because some viewers saw Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse as a show about the couple renovating and showcasing a luxury second home of their own. Others defended the project. The reported reaction was mixed; the coverage did not establish how widespread the backlash was.

Why did viewers object to the project?

TV Insider reported that some commenters were uncomfortable watching HGTV personalities renovate what they perceived as their own “luxury 2nd or 3rd homes.” One commenter said it looked like the hosts were showing off. The criticism was about the contrast between a personal luxury property and the client homes associated with the couple’s earlier television work—not a documented dispute over the quality of the renovation.

That framing is a viewer interpretation, not proof of the Gaineses’ motives or of the property’s eventual use. TV Insider’s May 29, 2024, report relayed comments ahead of the show’s premiere; it did not quantify the reaction or present it as a poll. TV Insider’s report on the backlash.

What is Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse about?

Magnolia describes the project as a renovation of a custom house built in 1965 near Lake Waco, Texas. Its design combines Spanish Revival and mid-century modern influences. According to Magnolia’s August 9, 2024 account, the property covers 1.5 acres and the home is more than 5,000 square feet. Those are Magnolia’s published descriptions, not independent appraisal figures.

Magnolia says the renovation team worked from original blueprints and photographs, aiming to bring the first owner’s vision together with updated finishes and functionality. The scale and personal nature of the project help explain why some viewers read the series differently from a renovation of a client’s home. Magnolia’s account of the Lakehouse.

Was the backlash unanimous?

No. TV Insider also reported viewers who defended the Gaineses and their work. The disagreement reflected different views of the premise: some saw a personal luxury renovation as self-promotion, while others viewed it as a legitimate project and part of the couple’s work in design and renovation.

The available report provides examples of reactions, not a measure of audience opinion. It does not support a percentage, a claim that viewers broadly rejected the show, or a conclusion about how the series performed.

Was the Lakehouse going to be private, rented, or sold?

TV Insider reported that commenters asked whether the property would remain a private home, be rented as an Airbnb, or be sold. Its report did not answer that question, and the cited Magnolia descriptions do not establish the home’s eventual use. It is therefore not possible from these sources to state whether the Gaineses planned to live there, rent it, or sell it.

How extensive was the renovation, and what did it cost?

Magnolia’s room-by-room account documents substantial work: the siding and trim were painted, the roof was replaced, the entry flooring and staircase were changed, and the kitchen was returned to its original location and refitted. The original wooden floors were refinished in some rooms. These details support describing a major renovation, but Magnolia’s published accounts do not give a total project cost. There is also no basis in the cited coverage to say the Gaineses profited from the property.

Magnolia’s renovation account also says the project inspired a seven-color Magnolia Home paint collection. That product detail helps explain one commercial connection to the series, but it does not establish the renovation budget or resolve questions about the property’s future use. What did the Gaineses say about returning to Fixer Upper?

TV Insider attributed a statement to the Gaineses from a Variety interview, reflecting on the show’s tenth anniversary: “When Fixer Upper premiered 10 years ago, we couldn’t have imagined the journey we had ahead of us. Though a lot has changed and evolved in the decade between then and now, our love for home is still at the heart of everything we do.” The statement speaks to the couple’s connection to the franchise; it does not directly address the criticism over the Lakehouse premise.
