Kennedy Jr. The sightings came amid reports about Kennedy and New York Magazine correspondent Olivia Nuzzi. They did not establish that Hines and Kennedy had separated—or explain why a ring was not visible.
What prompted the ring coverage?
The story surfaced in September 2024, when New York Magazine said correspondent Olivia Nuzzi had acknowledged “a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign.” The magazine placed Nuzzi on leave while it reviewed the matter. Subsequent coverage identified the subject as Kennedy; headlines often called the reported relationship an affair, but that was media characterization, not the wording of the magazine’s statement. PEOPLE/Yahoo Entertainment reported the magazine’s statement.
Nuzzi’s reported account added a distinction: she described “the nature of some communication” between herself and a former reporting subject as having turned personal, and said she did not directly report on that subject or use him as a source during that time. Did Cheryl Hines and RFK Jr. split up?
The cited photographs and reports do not confirm a separation. A photograph can show whether a ring appears visible at a particular moment; it cannot establish why it was absent, whether it was removed, or what a couple’s private relationship status is. The contrasting ring descriptions across the September and October images are a reason not to treat any one sighting as proof.

In November 2025, The Washington Post’s retrospective on Hines’s memoir reported that she described a conversation with Kennedy about the incident as having “tightened our ties.” That is later context about how Hines characterized the conversation, not a verified update on their marital status in 2026.
