At Governors Ball in New York on June 9, 2024, Chappell Roan said she had declined an invitation from the White House to perform at a Pride event. She answered the invitation from the stage: “We want liberty, justice, and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.”
What Roan said at Governors Ball
Roan appeared in a Statue of Liberty-inspired costume during her set. She told the crowd that the White House had asked her to perform for Pride, then dedicated “My Kink Is Karma” to the administration as a response to the invitation. The Independent reported the disclosure at the festival on Sunday, June 9; Pride.com and Rolling Stone Canada published accounts the following day.
Her reported reply was: “We want liberty, justice, and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.” Pride.com reported the quote on June 10, 2024.
How she explained the Statue of Liberty imagery
Roan tied the costume to the Statue of Liberty and Emma Lazarus’s poem “The New Colossus.” In the same speech, she specified the freedoms she meant: “That means freedom and trans rights. That means freedom and women’s rights. And it especially means…freedom for all oppressed people in occupied territories.”

- Bold pop hooks, sex positivity, honest songwriting and a heavy dose of glitter make up the world of Chappell Roan, the next multi-faceted force in pop music
Those remarks establish the context she gave for her message, but they should not be reduced to a single explanation for declining the invitation. Her direct response to the White House was broader and invoked liberty, justice, and freedom for all.
What is known about the invitation
Contemporaneous coverage from Pride.com, The Independent, and Rolling Stone Canada reports that Roan said she had turned down the invitation at Governors Ball. The reviewed reports relay her onstage account; they do not include independent White House confirmation, the invitation itself, or its precise terms. Accordingly, the invitation and its details are best described as Roan reported them, rather than as independently confirmed White House statements.

Later context
A 2024 TIME retrospective placed the refusal among Roan’s broader political positions and reported a later explanation to Rolling Stone in which she said she did not want “to be a monkey for Pride.” That later remark is additional context, not a replacement for what she said at Governors Ball or a complete account of her reasons.
