CBS’s Tracker is a crime drama built around a durable weekly-procedural engine: Justin Hartley plays Colter Shaw, a lone-wolf survivalist who tracks down missing people and collects rewards. Its post-Super Bowl launch made that familiar format a conspicuous 2024 TV event—but “the most 2024 procedural imaginable” is a playful description, not an independently measured ranking.

What is Tracker about?

CBS describes Colter Shaw as a survivalist who travels across the country to find missing people, take on dangerous cases and uncover hidden truths. He collects rewards for his work and has a trusted team helping him. That setup gives the series a clear case-of-the-week foundation while leaving room for Shaw’s personal story and relationships to develop. CBS’s Tracker page identifies Hartley as Shaw and lists the series as a crime drama.

What book is Tracker based on?

The series is based on Jeffery Deaver’s novel The Never Game, according to the Associated Press’s report ahead of the premiere. The novel provides the source for Shaw and the central premise; the television series presents that material as an ongoing crime drama.

Why did the post-Super Bowl premiere matter?

Tracker debuted after the 2024 Super Bowl, putting the new series in a high-profile broadcast slot. CBS said its premiere drew nearly 28 million viewers across platforms in its first week. That total included Live+SD viewing, seven days of DVR and on-demand playback, streaming on CBS TVE and Paramount+, and a February 15 encore. It is therefore a broad first-week multiplatform estimate, not a same-day live audience figure. CBS’s February 21, 2024 release also reported 6.865 million Live+SD viewers for the second episode during premiere week, February 12–18, 2024—a different episode and a narrower measurement.

How should the audience figures be read?

CBS and CBS Studios later publicized additional audience figures, but they cover different periods and use different measurement windows. They should not be read as one like-for-like ratings sequence.

Figure What it measures Attribution and qualification
Nearly 28 million Series premiere audience across platforms in its first week CBS, February 2024; includes Live+SD, seven-day DVR/VOD, CBS TVE and Paramount+ streaming, and the February 15 encore.
6.865 million Second episode, Live+SD, during February 12–18, 2024 CBS, February 2024; a Live+SD episode figure, not the premiere’s multiplatform total.
11.58 million per episode Season-to-date average using live plus seven-day viewing CBS, May 22, 2024; the release also said the series had reached more than 81 million viewers since its February debut, using a one-minute reach qualifier across linear and streaming.
18.2 million per episode Live-plus-35-day multiplatform average through November 3, 2024 CBS Studios, December 12, 2024; based on VideoAmp broadcast measurement and Paramount internal streaming data.

The figures come from different windows—Live+SD, live plus seven days, and live plus 35 days—and do not all describe the same episode or period. The longer the window, the more playback and streaming viewing can be counted; the releases also cite different measurement methods. CBS’s May 2024 season update and CBS Studios’ December 2024 update should be consulted with those distinctions in mind. These are network-published totals and averages, so they are best attributed to CBS or CBS Studios rather than presented as an independent comparative ranking.

Is Tracker the “most 2024” procedural?

That phrase works as editorial shorthand, not as a factual superlative. The series pairs a recognizable weekly mystery-and-reward premise with a launch designed to reach a mass broadcast audience, then extends viewing across streaming and playback. The available audience figures show strong reported reach, but their differing definitions do not establish that Tracker outranked every other procedural by a consistent measure.
