What Sally Bedell Smith said about the announcement
Smith was commenting on Catherine’s decision to speak publicly in a video about cancer discovered after her January 2024 abdominal surgery. Us Weekly reported that Smith described Catherine as “inherently shy” and said, “for her to do that took a lot.” Smith also praised the delivery as “sincere, dignified, poised” and “forthright.” Those are the biographer’s assessments of the announcement, not clinical findings or confirmed facts about Catherine’s private feelings. Us Weekly, April 3, 2024
What was known before Catherine’s video
On January 17, 2024, Kensington Palace said Catherine had undergone planned abdominal surgery and that it had been successful. The Palace expected a hospital stay of 10 to 14 days and said she was unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter. It also asked the public to understand her wish to maintain normality for her children and keep personal medical information private. Kensington Palace statement, January 17, 2024
What Catherine disclosed about her health
In her March 2024 video, Catherine said tests after the operation had found cancer and that her medical team had advised a course of preventative chemotherapy, according to Us Weekly’s April 3 report. The available reporting does not establish a cancer type, stage, prognosis, or further treatment details; none should be inferred from Smith’s comment about the emotional weight of speaking publicly.

What the later Royal Marsden account establishes
A Royal Family account dated January 15, 2025, says Catherine received treatment at The Royal Marsden and that she and the Prince of Wales became joint patrons of the trust. That is later historical context, not an update establishing her current medical status. The Royal Family, January 15, 2025
