Russell Mael told Music Week that Blanchett met Sparks backstage at the César Awards in Paris, where the band had performed a song from their film Annette. She told the Mael brothers she was a fan. The band described Blanchett’s performance as deadpan and character-based, and said she came up with both the dance and the way she would act. In a PBS FM interview, Sparks said the collaboration came together quickly and that her choices suited the mood of the song. Those are the band’s descriptions of her creative contribution. Which Sparks song and album feature the video?
“The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte” was the first single and title track from Sparks’ 26th studio album. Universal Music Canada announced the single on March 2, 2023, and said the official video starring Blanchett would premiere on YouTube the following day. The label lists 14 tracks. The sequence opens with the title song, followed by “Veronica Lake,” “Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is,” “Escalator,” and “The Mona Lisa’s Packing, Leaving Late Tonight,” and ends with “Gee, That Was Fun.” Apple Music also lists 14 songs and gives the album a 47-minute runtime; that duration is platform metadata, not a guarantee of identical playback time on every service or edition.
