Billie Eilish’s apparent walk across walls and ceiling during “bad guy” on Saturday Night Live was created with a rotating room and an attached camera—not by defying gravity. The 17-year-old performed the song on the show’s September 28, 2019, Season 45 premiere, then returned with her brother Finneas for “i love you.”

What Billie Eilish performed on SNL

Eilish appeared on the September 28, 2019 premiere of Saturday Night Live Season 45, hosted by Woody Harrelson. The episode listing identifies her as a musical performer (Peacock episode listing).

She performed two songs from her debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO?: “bad guy” and “i love you.” The elaborate rotating-room illusion was part of “bad guy”; “i love you” was a separate, more acoustic-style performance with Finneas. Contemporary coverage from Universal Music Japan links to both performances, while Scroll describes the two distinct presentations.

How the gravity-defying effect worked

The apparent ceiling walk came from a rotating box-like room with a camera attached. As the room turned, its surfaces seemed to change orientation around Eilish, making her look as if she were walking from the floor onto the walls and ceiling. The illusion was achieved by moving the set and camera; Eilish was not literally walking upside down.

Eilish said the setup drew inspiration from Fred Astaire’s ceiling-walking sequence in the 1951 film Royal Wedding. In a behind-the-scenes video quoted by iHeart, she described the experience: “It’s pretty disorienting. It’s not scary, ever. It’s been only fun, pretty much. For me it was pretty easy to get the hang of.”

That contemporaneous iHeart report also said Eilish had two sprained ankles and had gone through safety procedures before the performance. It does not provide a full account of the production’s safety arrangements.
