The creators’ explanation combines story and production: Christian Linke said the characters’ losses, fragile trust and looming confrontation with Jinx made the moment feel urgent, and he recalled Fortiche animation director Barthelemy Maunoury saying the studio could not yet have animated it well in Season 1.
Why the kiss comes at the end of Act 1
In a November 10, 2024 interview with TechRadar, co-creator Christian Linke described the kiss as a moment shaped by what Caitlyn and Vi have already lost and what they fear may change. Their relationship is under strain as they pursue Jinx, and Vi senses that the trust between them is fragile. Linke called the scene “the calm before the storm”: the characters may understand it as a last moment together before the danger ahead.
That placement makes the kiss more than a romantic pause. It comes after the consequences of Jinx’s attack and just before the conflict threatens to overwhelm the pair. Linke put it simply: “I think they’re both very afraid of change.”
What Vi’s choice means to Caitlyn
Co-creator Alex Yee framed the scene as a commitment by Vi. She chooses Caitlyn over Jinx, a choice that helps explain why Caitlyn takes the lead in the moment. As Gizmodo recounts, the kiss follows Caitlyn’s promise not to change like other people in Vi’s life. In that context, the scene registers both affection and a decision about whom Vi trusts as the crisis approaches.

Linke also credited lead writer Amanda Overton with championing Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship and shaping details of their dynamic. His interview offers that credit without laying out a complete writers’ room timeline.
Why the creators say Season 1 was too soon technically
Linke said he later spoke with Fortiche animation director Barthelemy Maunoury about the scene. According to Linke’s account, Maunoury said that if the kiss had been written in Season 1, the team would not have been able to execute it well then. Linke relayed his words to TechRadar: “I don’t think we would’ve done a good job. We couldn’t have done it in season one”.
Rank #2
That is a production recollection reported by Linke, not an independently published technical assessment of Fortiche’s software, staffing or general animation ability. It supports a specific claim about the team’s confidence in this scene at that point, rather than a claim that a Season 1 kiss was impossible in every sense.

Netflix Tudum identifies Linke and Yee as Arcane’s co-creators and says the series was made with French studio Fortiche Production in partnership with Riot Games. Its Season 2 production guide says the first drawing for the season followed the series’ November 2021 debut and describes a three-year creative effort. The guide also reports that Fortiche’s creative team peaked at about 450 artists across the US and France during Season 2 production.

The clearest answer to why the scene waited is therefore two-part: its emotional timing fits the characters’ predicament in Season 2, while Linke’s account says the animation director felt the team was not ready to do it well in Season 1.
