Then she noticed that “Bryce Dallas” sounded, as she put it, “like a porn name.” A conversation with her parents also helped her decide she was proud to use the Howard name.
Why did Bryce Dallas Howard use “Bryce Dallas”?
When Howard was studying acting and beginning professional work, she used her first and middle names rather than her family surname. She said she was insecure and hoped people would not assume she was acting only because of what her family represented. In a 2006 Los Angeles Times profile, she described not wanting to trade on her father’s status. The profile reported that she applied to NYU as Bryce Dallas and was billed under that name in a student production.
In a 2015 interview with ABC News while promoting Jurassic World, Howard put the motive simply: “I was a little insecure, hoping people don’t think that I’m only doing this because of whatever.” The name was a way to seek a judgment of her work on its own, not evidence that she had legally changed her name.
What was the “hilarious reason” she reconsidered?
Howard later realized the two-name version had an unintended sound. In the ABC News interview, she joked, “that sounds like a porn name.” The Independent recalled the same joke in a 2016 interview, describing her reaction as thinking it sounded “a little like a porn star.” It was her humorous observation about how “Bryce Dallas” came across—not a formal industry decision or the original reason she left off Howard.

How did her family name come back into the picture?
In different interviews, Howard recalled her parents asking whether she was ashamed or not proud to come from their family. In the 2019 WIRED Autocomplete interview, she remembered them asking, “are you not proud to come from our family?” She answered that she was proud. The Los Angeles Times account describes a conversation with her father as the turning point; in that profile, Howard said, “I realized I’m proud to be my parents’ daughter and proud to use my last name.” These are accounts from separate interviews, so they need not be treated as one precisely identical exchange.
She ultimately used Howard professionally. The story is not that she rejected her family and then changed her mind about them; she was trying to avoid assumptions about her career, then recognized that using her family name did not mean she was less serious about earning her place as an actor.

Why is her middle name Dallas?
Dallas is Howard’s middle name, not the surname she initially omitted. She has explained that it refers to Dallas, Texas, where she was conceived. She confirmed the detail in the WIRED interview, saying, “It’s where I was conceived.”
