Why Bob Dylan Can Be So Hard to See Onstage

Reviews of Bob Dylan’s 2025 Bangor and 2026 San Diego concerts describe dim stages and difficult sightlines, but they do not establish that every show looks the same or explain Dylan’s intent.

Bob Dylan has been difficult to see at some recent concerts, according to reviewers who described dim, backlit stages, a hooded figure at the piano and video screens that offered little detail. The reports are specific to individual performances—not proof that he is invisible at every show, or an explanation from Dylan himself.

What reviewers saw at two concerts

Concert Reported view and staging What the account establishes
Bangor, Maine, September 5, 2025 Reviewer Bob Keyes wrote, “I never saw him from 20-plus rows back.” He described Dylan behind the piano in a hood, white light trees above it and side-stage video feeds that showed no detail or image of Dylan. Keyes reported that his own sightline did not allow him to see Dylan. He also wrote that lawn attendees had no clue what was happening onstage; that is his observation, not a measured survey of the crowd.
San Diego, June 21, 2026 George Varga described Dylan in a black hoodie on a dim, backlit stage with no spotlights. The live video was shot from far enough away to make Dylan seem like an apparition. Varga also reported that cellphone photos were explicitly prohibited. Varga’s account describes that performance’s lighting and distant video. The San Diego Union-Tribune review was republished by the Jefferson City News Tribune on June 28, 2026.

The Bangor details come from Bob Keyes’s review of the Maine Savings Amphitheater concert; the San Diego description comes from Varga’s review of the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park performance. Both are named critics’ accounts of particular shows, not systematic measurements of what every audience member could see.

Why is Bob Dylan so hard to see onstage?

The reviewers connect the subdued visual presentation to an emphasis on listening to the music. That is their interpretation, not a stated explanation from Dylan. Neither account documents a direct comment by Dylan or an official representative about the hood, lighting, screens or photo policy.

In Bangor, Keyes found the effect positive even as he noted that some concertgoers were perturbed by not being able to see Dylan. Varga’s review also reproduced a disgruntled attendee’s Facebook comment. These reports show differing reactions, but cannot establish how the wider audience felt.

What the official record confirms—and what it does not

Dylan’s official website confirms a September 19, 2025 performance at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, and lists 17 songs. The listing provides no information about lighting, sightlines or audience visibility, so it cannot confirm that the Alpine Valley show used the staging described in Bangor or San Diego.

Varga reported that the San Diego concert had a capacity audience of 7,400 at Rady Shell. That figure describes the event’s audience capacity, not how many people could see Dylan or how they felt about the show.

Can you see Bob Dylan at his concerts?

These accounts do not support a universal yes or no. Keyes said he could not see Dylan from more than 20 rows back in Bangor; Varga described a distant, apparition-like image on the video screen in San Diego. Visibility can therefore be poor from some reported vantage points, but these reviews do not establish what a person would see from another seat or at another concert. Neither account offers a systematic view across venues or performances.
