Billie Eilish proposed the idea for her British Vogue shoot. In the June 2021 issue, she explored corsetry and a mid-20th-century pin-up look she had long admired, choosing to show more of her body in a fashion story. Her explanation was about personal choice—not a claim that wearing a corset settled questions about body positivity.
What was the idea behind the shoot?
Eilish was 19 when she worked with British Vogue on the shoot, photographed by Craig McDean. She wanted to experiment with a pin-up aesthetic and corsetry, and to present herself differently from the image many people associated with her.
The shoot appeared in British Vogue’s June 2021 issue, which the magazine said went on sale on 7 May. Eilish brought the concept to Vogue and collaborated with the team led by style director Dena Giannini. Giannini described the process as “a very collaborative process.”
Custom fashion, made for the story
The looks included a custom Burberry trench and corseted body, pieces from Mugler, and custom designs from Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Balmain, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, and Dolce & Gabbana. They were garments created or selected for the shoot, not evidence that the exact photographed pieces were available for readers to buy.

Giannini said the styling aimed at “celebrating womanhood, celebrating the female form, a strong and effortless sensuality.” The process involved an exchange of hundreds of images and commissioned custom designs, making the shoot Eilish-led but collaboratively produced.
What did Billie Eilish say about wearing a corset?
In her interview with Laura Snapes, published alongside the cover story on 2 May 2021, Eilish anticipated that some people would see a corset as inconsistent with body positivity. She voiced the imagined criticism: “‘If you’re about body positivity, why would you wear a corset? Why wouldn’t you show your actual body?’”

Her answer centered on autonomy: “My thing is that I can do whatever I want.” She added, “It’s all about what makes you feel good.” And she made the point directly: “Showing your body and showing your skin – or not – should not take any respect away from you.”
Why did the photos prompt controversy?
Eilish’s oversized clothes had become a prominent part of her public image. Some audiences treated that image as a statement about body positivity, even though she said she had never claimed to represent the movement. In the interview, she described wearing baggy clothes in the context of difficult feelings about her body; she also objected to people treating a paparazzi image of her in a fitted vest as a body-positivity milestone.

The photoshoot collided with expectations built around that familiar image. For some viewers, the corset looked like a reversal. Eilish’s own explanation was more specific: she did not want her clothing choices turned into a fixed moral position, or her worth and respect measured by how much skin she showed. The shoot does not establish that corsetry resolves body-image pressures; it records her choice to try a style she liked.

British Vogue reported at the time that its cover post surpassed 1 million likes in six minutes and became the most-liked cover in the magazine’s Instagram history up to that point. The magazine also said the cover interview reached 1 million global readers in one day, which it described as the highest-traffic day in the site’s history at the time. Those are Vogue’s contemporaneous reports, not audited platform data or proof of lasting cultural impact.
