When did Bill Maher stop touring?
Maher’s last stand-up show was in December 2024, according to Rolling Stone’s November 2025 report. On January 10, 2025, he told CNN he was stopping stand-up because he was tired of touring after 40 years. His January explanation focused on the demands of the road; he offered more reasons in conversations reported later that year.
His first explanation: touring had worn him down
In a January 10, 2025, CNN interview with Jake Tapper, Maher said, “I am stopping doing stand up just because I’m tired of touring, just because I’ve been doing it for 40 years.” He described stand-up as work that requires continued preparation and said he needed a break.
He also pointed to the practical grind: travel and Saturday trips after working on Real Time. His comments framed the decision as a pause from touring rather than a rejection of comedy itself. He left open the possibility of going back to it.

Why did he later bring up politics and safety?
In a November 2025 conversation with Patton Oswalt on his Club Random podcast, Maher said the political climate made it a good time not to tour. As Rolling Stone and The Daily Beast reported, he said he feared he could be shot by either the left or the right.
That was Maher’s stated fear, not a report of a specific threat against him or evidence that touring was objectively unsafe. The political explanation came later than his January remarks about fatigue and travel, so the accounts add context rather than establish one exclusive cause.

What did he say about younger audiences and ticket sales?
Maher also offered his own take on changing audience tastes and the scale of live shows. In the later discussion, he said younger people did not want to see someone aged 70 and contrasted his theater draw with performers who sell arenas. He suggested that his weekly television presence could partly explain why he did not sell at arena scale. These are his observations, not independently verified ticket-sales figures or findings from an audience-preference study.
In a separate account of his comments, The Independent quoted him saying of younger generations’ comedy and music tastes, “I don’t get it, and I’m not supposed to get it.” The remark captures his view of a generational gap; it does not establish that younger audiences broadly reject older comedians.

Is Bill Maher retired from comedy or television?
No. Maher said he was not retiring and pointed to his continuing television show and podcast. He also said he missed stand-up. In the January CNN interview, he said, “Maybe I’ll go back to it.” The available statements support describing his decision as stopping or pausing touring, not as a definitive promise never to perform stand-up again.
