Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter received no nominations for the 2024 CMA Awards, despite major success on Billboard’s country charts. The CMA’s official nominee list confirms the omission; it does not explain it. The most accurate answer is that the awards are decided by industry-member voting, while the public record does not reveal why voters left the album out.
Did Beyoncé and Cowboy Carter get any 2024 CMA nominations?
No. The Country Music Association’s official announcement for the 58th Annual CMA Awards named the nominees in each category, and neither Beyoncé nor Cowboy Carter appeared on the list. The Album of the Year nominees were Kacey Musgraves’s Deeper Well, Luke Combs’s Fathers & Sons, Chris Stapleton’s Higher, Cody Johnson’s Leather, and Jelly Roll’s Whitsitt Chapel. The CMA announcement is the primary record of the nominations.
The result was striking because the album and its singles had already made substantial inroads on country charts. But chart performance and a CMA nomination are different outcomes: the charts track listener activity, while CMA nominations are determined through an industry-member voting process.
How are CMA nominations decided?
The CMA describes its awards as selected by more than 7,000 industry professional members. Its published category rules set out eligibility and voting provisions. This is not a public popularity poll, so chart success does not automatically translate into a nomination.

For the 2024 awards, contemporaneous trade reporting said the eligibility period ran from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024, and described member write-in nominations, with specific treatment for eligible top-10 singles. That report also said artists and labels did not submit entries in the way associated with some other awards shows. These details describe the 2024 process as reported at the time; the CMA’s rules are the authoritative source for the process and can change. Billboard’s contemporaneous account covered the year’s mechanics.
How successful was Cowboy Carter on country charts?
The album’s chart record makes the absence noteworthy, but it cannot establish how CMA members voted or what they valued.

- Cowboy Carter spent four weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, according to ABC News. The outlet reported that Beyoncé was the first Black woman to top that chart. ABC News’ 2024 report documents the chart milestones.
- “Texas Hold ’Em” spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, according to the same report.
- “II Most Wanted” peaked at No. 2 and Beyoncé’s rendition of “Jolene” reached No. 3 on Hot Country Songs, ABC News reported.
- The Guardian also reported that Cowboy Carter was the first album by a Black woman to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, and that “Texas Hold ’Em” was the first song by a Black woman to top Billboard’s country song chart. The Guardian’s account places those records in the context of the CMA omission.
Why was Beyoncé left off the CMA ballot?
There is no official public CMA explanation for the omission in the available record, and member-level ballots have not been disclosed. It is therefore not possible to identify a confirmed reason or say that one particular factor caused the result.
Country radio and promotion
The Guardian reported that Cowboy Carter had limited promotion on country radio and discussed radio’s role in shaping industry preferences. That is relevant context, not proof that radio exposure determined the nomination vote.

Community connection
In an Associated Press interview about recognition in country music, country star Mickey Guyton said: “A lot of times in country music, if you’re releasing a country record, you need to — you don’t need to, but it’s beneficial to you to — invest in the community and really show yourself in that audience so the community feels an attachment to you.” That is Guyton’s perspective on the genre, not a CMA finding or evidence of what individual voters thought. The AP interview provides the context for her comments.
Beyoncé’s own description of the project
The Guardian reported that Beyoncé described Cowboy Carter as “a ‘Beyoncé’ album.” It also quoted her account that the project grew from an experience in which she “did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” Those remarks illuminate her framing of the album and experience; they do not establish that the experience involved CMA voters or explain their nominations.

What the 2024 CMA result does—and does not—show
The official nominee list establishes that Cowboy Carter received no nominations, while the chart data establishes its substantial commercial performance in country categories. The CMA voting model explains why those facts can coexist: chart positions do not decide the nominations. Without a public explanation or disclosed ballots, claims that radio, community engagement, genre identity, or another specific factor caused the omission remain interpretations rather than confirmed explanations.
