In a 2025 interview, he said, “I mean, I apologized to the person personally, right? When it happened.” He also said he discussed the episode in his 2019 Netflix special because people wanted to know how he felt about it. The available reporting does not independently verify the private exchange.
What Ansari said about a personal apology
In a September 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ansari said he had apologized to the woman personally when the encounter happened. AOL reproduced his words: “I mean, I apologized to the person personally, right? When it happened.” AOL’s September 3, 2025 report also says Ansari disputed the idea that he had simply stepped away from work, pointing to his tour and his stand-up special.

That is Ansari’s account of a private exchange. The reporting available here does not establish whether the woman confirmed that an apology occurred or what was said.
What his 2018 public statement said
After Babe.net published the woman’s account in January 2018 under the pseudonym Grace, Ansari issued a public statement. He said he had believed the encounter was consensual and was surprised and concerned to learn that she had felt uncomfortable. He added that he took her words to heart and responded privately after taking time to process what she had said. TIME quoted the statement.
#1 Best Overall
That statement acknowledged her reported discomfort and described a private response; it was not a formal public apology to the audience. Ansari’s later explanation distinguishes that private apology from a public apology.
The allegation and the differing accounts
The encounter followed a date in September 2017. In Babe.net’s report, Grace said the encounter made her uncomfortable and that she felt violated. Ansari’s statement said he believed at the time that the encounter was consensual. Those are attributed accounts, not an adjudicated finding. Babe.net published Grace’s account.

Why he addressed it in his 2019 special
Ansari discussed the episode in his Netflix special Right Now. In the special, he said, “Ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way,” and expressed hope that he had become a better person, according to the Los Angeles Times. In the 2025 interview, he said he felt he should address the experience onstage because people were curious about his feelings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to understand the distinction
- Private apology: Ansari says he apologized directly to the woman at the time; the available coverage does not independently verify the exchange.
- 2018 public statement: He expressed surprise and concern about her reported discomfort, said he took her words seriously, and said he responded privately.
- 2019 onstage discussion: He spoke publicly about feeling terrible that she felt that way and hoping he had become a better person.
So the direct answer is that Ansari says he did apologize personally, and he later explained his decision to discuss the episode publicly in his special. That explanation should not be mistaken for independent confirmation of the private apology or for a public apology in 2018.
