Its June 27, 2023 launch sold out quickly, but holders criticized the hectic mint, reported access problems and artwork they felt looked too much like the original Azuki collection. Azuki acknowledged those concerns and discussed letting the community vote on new backgrounds; the available reporting does not establish whether that proposal was carried out.
What Azuki Elementals was—and how it was allocated
Elementals was a profile-picture NFT collection connected to Azuki. OpenSea reported that 10,000 Elementals were airdropped to holders as Elemental Beans, while another 10,000 were offered through a Dutch auction that started at 2 ETH. OpenSea’s June 30, 2023 recap described the allocation and auction terms.
The sale was not a single open-to-everyone window. Azuki and BEANZ holders had priority access before the planned public sale. OpenSea reported that the sale NFTs sold during the presale window, so the public sale did not proceed as originally planned.
What happened during the June 27 mint
The mint took place on June 27, 2023. The Block reported that the 10,000 sale NFTs sold out in 15 minutes and that the sale generated $37.5 million in proceeds. Those are The Block’s reported launch figures, not evidence by themselves of profit, lasting value or wider market impact. The Block’s June 30 report covered the sale timing and proceeds.

Speed did not mean a smooth experience. OpenSea reported complaints that the mint was hectic and claims that minting bugs, amid high traffic, prevented some eligible holders from minting. The reported sellout and access complaints describe different parts of the launch: the collection sold quickly, while some holders said the process kept them from participating as intended.
Why holders objected to the art and the launch
The reveal looked too familiar to some holders
After the reveal, holders criticized Elementals for looking too similar to the original Azuki collection. Their objection was not simply that the two collections shared a project name: they expected Elementals to feel distinct, and the perceived resemblance made the new release seem less like a separate collection.

“Dilution” was a concern, not a measured outcome
In this context, dilution meant the fear that a new collection with art perceived as too similar could weaken the original Azuki collection’s distinctiveness or perceived scarcity. That was a concern voiced by holders; the contemporaneous reporting does not establish an objectively measured effect on the original collection’s value.
Access problems added to the frustration
The priority windows and high-traffic mint shaped who could try to participate and when. OpenSea’s recap reported claims of bugs affecting some eligible holders. Together with the hectic process and the reaction to the revealed art, those claims fed the backlash beyond the visual resemblance alone.

How Azuki responded
Azuki acknowledged the criticism. In a statement reproduced by OpenSea on June 30, 2023, the project wrote: “This time, we missed the mark. We hear you – the mint process was hectic, the PFPs feel similar and, even worse, dilutive to Azuki.” OpenSea’s recap reproduced the statement.
The Block’s June 28, 2023 report also quoted the project emphasizing the original collection’s priority: “The OG Azuki collection defined who we are, and will always have top priority and outsized allocation for all future rewards, drops, and experiences.” The Block’s report placed that assurance alongside the immediate criticism.

Separately, The Block reported on June 30 that the team discussed allowing the community to vote on new Elementals artwork backgrounds. This establishes that the idea was discussed, not that a vote occurred or that the artwork changed. The reporting available here documents the immediate June 2023 response, not later follow-through or the collection’s current status.
